Hi!
I am about to replace the G3-card in my Umax S900 with a G4, and I would like to know if I have to reinstall the systems (10.2.3 and 9.1) to make full use of the G4 (Altivec)? And if yes, in the case of OS X, can I just install on top of the old one, or do I have to install a completely fresh system? Thanks for your help!

You shouldn't need to reinstall anything, although it's probably best to take a backup of your system before changing the processor. Better safe than sorry...

hmm i donīt think that you need to install a fresh system... i mean the system is precompiled anyway, and it should definitely figure out if thereīs altivec present or not.

No reinstallation is necessary.

OS X no. OS 9 yes.

OS 9 does not install the vector library extensions unless it is installed on a G4 computer. However, since you are not on an Apple G4, the installer may still not install the G4 extensions since it is probably looking for the Gestalt ID of an Apple G4 computer.

That's what I would have expected, but a friend of mine upgraded his G3 b/w with a G4 and told me that he didn't notice much of a speed increase in OS X until he did a fresh install. OK, a fresh install may always be a bit faster, but I don't think that's what he meant.

Can these be installed by hand? I read on xlr8yourmac that there used to be separate Altivec extensions in OS 9.0.4, but they are not present anymore in 9.1.
