I am wondering about people's opinions on how to back up an Xserve. Of course Retrospect is an option. However, I'd prefer to use a solution that a Unix administrator who's never worked with Mac OS X would be comfortable with.

What are some of the standard ways people back up their Unix boxes that could be made to work with an Xserve, as well?

I'd guess that tar could do it; as I recall, that was tar's original perpose...

The unix commands don't work with tape drives though, remember. So part of the issue is what you are backing up to.

How about using mirrored harddrives of another Mac/PC around you and tar everythings. should be faster than a tape drive (well, one that normal people can afford).
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

I believe that even on Unix, people tend to use big backup programs. While the cheap folks use the standard devices and tar, there are problems with that approach.

If you already have some Unix servers, then a centralized backup is helpful. (And indeed this is what I've done back when I was doing IT, albeit with Windows) Glancing at Source Forge, here are a few choices for that. The software probably will compile under OSX without much problem. A few require you to install Gnome, but that's not a problem with Fink. In fact if you check Fink you might find a few backup solutions. (I'd do it, but I clobbered Fink by upgrading Perl and now have to wait until Fink is updated)

If you want, you might consider using PSync to backup the server to an other server. There are, I believe, several nice Aqua front ends for it all. Here's PSync for OSX.
