Launch programs at start-up

In past OS you could set programs or files to launch at start-up. Is there a way to do that in OSX?

You can easily have applications launch (or files open) when you log in (System Preferences / Login Items pane.)
Running things at boot is a little trickier, but it doesn't sound like that's what you want.
