What do you think is the best free e-mail
service avaliable. I'am looking for something that could work with MAC OS X mail app.

Try www.mymacmail.com .

You get whatever@mymacmail.com as a POP3 e-mail account, 5 MB space, web mail support, and more. All for free.

www.spymac.com has a very good free email service.

"Features of Spymac Mail:
* 25MB of space
* Spell check feature
* Multiple web interfaces
* Auto-reply
* External POP and SMTP access.
* Large attachments accepted (12MB)
* LDAP People Search
* Advanced online scheduler"

only if you can handle having an "@spymac.com" address though!

I would recomend using a mail service that provides IMAP. This is what mac.com had and it's a lot better than the usual POP3 service.

I personally use http://fastmail.fm. For $9.95 you get an IMAP acount for life. They also have a web interface to check your mail.

Here's some discussion on why you might want to use IMAP:

Who cares about features and usability when you can have an address like user@beer.com.

I will second the vote for http://fastmail.fm
I know it is not free...but you don't get flogged by spam as you do at places like hotmail and I never have had a service issue with them for the past 2 years

Yahoo is not free if you want to use it as a POP account. $30 a year, I believe.

http://www.myrealbox.com

Provides both POP3 and IMAP I believe. . . . also actively filters for spam.

Completely free, with no advertising.

10 MB of space.

Is there a free e-mail provider that offers SSL?

I worry about mac.com sending my password in plain text...

Well, both mymacmail.com and myrealbox.com are not accepting new registrations. At least I got spymac now.
