People have said that data CDs burned in the Finder are supposed to be combo HFS+/ISO 9660.

Well, I just burned a DVD in the Finder which is seen as HFS+ on the Mac and which is unreadable on the PC. Does the Finder burn data DVDs the same way it records data CDs?

What about Disk Copy?

(P.S. The previous threads I've looked at talk about burning CDs with the Finder, not DVDs.)

Not that I have a DVD-burner, but aren't DVD-RWs usually in the UDF format, on both Mac and Windows?

This was a DVD-R, because my SuperDrive does not write DVD-RW. (Apple has crippled the TiBook SuperDrive by removing it's native DVD-RAM and DVD-RW write support via a custom firmware.)

Also, DVD-Rs can be written in a number of different formats. UDF is just one of them. Actually, UDF comes in a number of flavours too. Macs understand UDF 1.0 and UDF 1.5. They do not understand UDF 2.0 (which is a drag).

On a dual gig with a superdrive, finder burning always gives HFS+ DVDs for me, which is rather a pain if I want to, for example, play them in a DVD player.

You need discribe or toast to burn to UDF format. Which is annoying because that's the only thing I need to use discribe for since the finder burns data DVDs pretty well. The UDF format won't support applications and the like so isn't good for back-up. Don't know how well UDF works for general files and documents.

My DVD player can play a HFS+ disc with a valid VIDEO_TS folder on it.
I was suprised, too.

Since you have Toast why are you using the Finder to burn?

My results:

Finder:
CD - works fine in Windows
DVD - unreadable in Windows

Disk Copy:
CD - unreadable in Windows
CD in MS-DOS format - Finder won't let me burn it
DVD - unreadable in Windows

The only way to burn a data DVD-R that is cross platform readable is to use third party software (ignoring iDVD here of course).

Oh well, I guess it's Toast for me.

Weird. I'll have to try it. Which DVD player?

I still don't get it, why don't you want to use toast when you have it?

It's not that. It's just that everyone's been saying that the "Finder burns hybrid discs that work in Windows". So I was surprised when my data DVD-Rs were unreadable. The hybrid discs are only for CDs, something I learned the hard way.

I shall use Toast from now on.

Hmm, well that burning in the Finder was just a nice add on that Apple made for OS9 years ago. If you want anything fancy toast is the way to kick it.
