G4 800MGhz tower, 10.1.3, 768M RAM

Hi folks

I have searched - hope I'm not asking people to repeat advice.

Firstly, Quicktime doesn't want to stream. It just downloads, then plays. I've gone through all the settings.

Secondly, I'm curious as to which players people are using alongside Q/T. Which popular formats can version 5 not support and are there any reasons not to upgrade to 6? I'd like to be able to cover as many formats as poss - including Real, etc - so should I simply look for as many players as I can download? I've heard bad things about w/m/p on the mac...

Also, foolish as I feel, I seem to have no option to save Q/T / mpeg downloads - I guess this streamed data isn't saveable?

Finally, I'm getting about 58KBps (max) from a 512 ADSL connection (I'm in the UK). How am I doing? (This is mainly from 'atomfilms').

Thanks if you can offer advice.
Ben

Why not upgrade to 10.1.5 at least?

Are you sure you're not trying to view something that requires QT6?

58KBps = 464Kbitps

Do you have a firewall or router?

I've not had the machine long and only just got online, so I haven't got round to any upgrading yet. Surely the operating system version won't effect Quicktime's ability to stream a file?

I used OS 9 for a couple of days and streamed fine.

Firewall? Possibly, since I use an ethernet modem, but I'm not too sure about this. Would that effect things?

And if anyone can respond to the media player questions, I'd appreciate it. To be honest, I've read too many horror stories and am too inexperienced to feel comfortable with downloading every utility and upgrade I can find. It's difficult to know what you need.

thanks

yup, it sure as hell does. Also make sure that OSX's built in firewall is not on.

"I'm getting about 58KBps (max) from a 512 ADSL connection (I'm in the UK). How am I doing?"
Thats about right. I'm with BTOpenworld in the UK and normally get the same speed as you mentioned. Highest I've ever got is 67Kbps.

"Surely the operating system version won't effect Quicktime's ability to stream a file?"
Yes it can, the operating system can affect anything running on your computer. Its important you update your system as far as you can to take advantage of bug fixes, security enhancements and additional features. There really is no reason why you shouldn't update to atleast 10.1.5 and if you can afford to update to Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar.

"am too inexperienced to feel comfortable with downloading every utility and upgrade I can find"
Stop worring, everything will be fine..download stuff you need or want to try. Don't download everything you see. Certainly download updates though v.important.
Remember its very easy to remove applications you don't use and if you have any trouble or problems this board will help you!

"I've read too many horror stories"
Stop worring so much and stop reading horror stories

"are there any reasons not to upgrade to quicktime 6"
no

video players
There are 3 main video players which most people have:
Quicktime
RealPlayer
Windows Media Player
There is no reason why you shouldn't have these on your computer and are easy to remove if you change your mind. These players can be found on www.versiontracker.com
There are a few other, less used players which support different formats but I doubt you'll be needing them.

"Also, foolish as I feel, I seem to have no option to save Q/T / mpeg downloads - I guess this streamed data isn't saveable?"
You can only save online quicktime movies (the type that appear in your browser) if you have Quicktime Pro.

btw WMP and QT (no '/') not w/m/p & Q/T
