I hope someone can help.

I have just upgraded a friends machine from 10.1.2 to 10.2 using his new 10.2 update pack.

After the update, the graphics on his FP iMac 800 where corupt, parts of the screen break up and seem to have strange artifacts. It can seem to be OK but then an area will be distorted again.

I thought the install might have been an issue so I erased his disc (after a backup of his files, etc) and did a complete 10.2 install, same problem broken graphics. I also tried installing the 10.2.3 update as well, no change.

There was no problem before under 10.1.2 so I presume the Quartz Graphics change has picked up a fault somewhere.

I have tried :-

Running the Hardware test disc - no faults reported
Running fsck, no problems reported
Using my OSX install discs - no difference

The machine seems to work fine otherwise, but is unusable due to very strange graphics artifacts.

I can seem to find any reported faults like this, does anyone have any suggestions ?

I'll take a guess, firmware upgrade? Should be on the OS X 10.2 disk. A friend had a similar result with his imac after installing 10.2 but not doing the firmware upgrade.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Apple says no Firmware update is needed for FP iMac. Plus the Firmware updates need OS 9, and this is now not installed as I did an erase and 10.2 does not install it. I did not do a FW update on my FP iMac which was a very early one, they have a later model so i'm sure it does not need it.

Will try zapping the PRAM.

Do you think it is worth trying the Hard Reset button in the base of the iMac ? What does it actually do ?

Any other ideas are welcome.

Thanks

Anymore suggestions, I'm still hoping for a fix here rather than the iMac going back to Apple with a hardware fault.

Thanks

An update :-

Zapping the PRAM - no change
No Firmware update required (Apple confirmed)
Reported to Apple, no previous examples of this reported, being raised to a higher level, they will call back. Apple suggested all the things we have already done, no help yet.

They suspect it will need to be picked up for a hardware repair. :-(

quite strange. i had the same problem on my iBook when i first installed 10.2

i sent it into Apple, when i got it back the graphics problem was fixed, but then it would crash every 10 minutes, had to send it in again. (quite annoying)

i'm quite certain its something 10.2 does in the install that sometimes causes problems. unfortunately, while caused by software, its now a hardware problem, so.. all you can really do is send it in. hopefully, for you, they'll get it right the first time.

good luck
