I'm trying to turn off talking alerts. I've gone to System Preferences => Speech => Spoken User Interface, and unchecked everything, however the alert still speaks whenever an application requires my attention. How do you turn this off?

Assuming you unchecked everything, it should be off. If not, try rebooting and seeing if the settings come back on. If they do, try repairing permissions or deleting your speech preferences (in ~/Library/Preferences).

The boxes do not become checked after rebooting, but the talking alerts continue. They speak after the alert has been displayed for about 30 seconds or so.

In my ~/Library/Preferences folder, the following files have the word speech in them;

com.apple.speech.feedbackservicesserver.plist
com.apple.speech.prefs.plist
com.apple.speech.recognition.AppleSpeechRecognitio n.prefs.plist
com.apple.speech.recognition.feedback.prefs.plist
com.apple.speech.recognitionserver.plist
com.apple.speech.synthesis.general.prefs.plist
com.apple.speech.voice.prefs.plist

Which of these, if any, should be deleted?

Unfortunately, I can't tell you which exactly to delete, but you could try to move these files to the trash, reboot and check if it's better. Then put them back one by one (reboot in between) and see which one is the culprit.
