Hi all,
after reading about problems doing this, I phoned apple, and they confirmed that the finder will only write an HFS+ format data dvd.
They aren't sure if itunes can do anything differently, and I'm waiting for a reply from them.
Want I want to do is back up 30Gb of mp3's that I have in itunes, and put them onto dvd's so that my wife can take our music collection away on an extended business trip. She has a PC laptop, so i want to be able to write the dvd's in a format that the pc will be able to read.
I think that toast may be able to do this, but I'd like to find a cheaper option as I don't need to use toast for anything else at the moment. All other backups can be in mac format.
I'm using a new Tibook with superdrive.
Once I have software to write the discs, can I just copy the contents of the itunes music folder to a dvd?
Anyone else tried to do this? All suggestions gratefully received.
Cheers,
Justin.

Check out this thread.
Toast will work as you know. iDVD's DVD-ROM section will work, but that's a pain at best. Dunno about iTunes.
Disk Copy and the Finder will NOT work.
If it's a music collection you're after a CD or 2 might just suffice though. How long is the trip? A CD will hold well over 100 MP3s. The Finder will burn a PC readable CD-R (but not DVD-R).

Hi Eug, thanks for the reply.
I had read the other thread before posting. A few cd's of mp3 won't work because she's away for 6 months, and you know that whatever music you have is never what you want to liisten to at the time.
I thought half a dozen dvd's would be a good solution.
Didn't know about idvd, I'll have to read the help to see how that works. I thought it was just for movies and film.
cheers,
J.

You can put a VERY short video on the DVD-R to get iDVD going. Once that's done, all the rest of the space is left over for DVD-ROM content. Then you can drop all your MP3s in there. However, this requires you waste time creating a short video (from a JPEG for example) and then author a DVD-R. I don't think you can make a DVD-ROM only disc with iDVD.
It might only take 10 minutes to do that, but like I said it's a hassle at best. Plus it requires an internal DVD-R burner. But it works in a pinch if you don't want to buy Toast. (When I make short videos with lots of JPEGs or something in a slideshow, I usually also put those JPEGs on the same disc, so that the burnt DVD-R has a built backup for all the images.)
