Now that apple's released their own X11 deal, is it possible to only run the X11 part of it? For instance, log in as ">console" and type:

quartz-wm

and then have it be magical and work?

I believe that Apple's X11 makes use of the OSX Window Manager which is a user process. So, no, I don't think so. If you read the caveat page when you installed it, it mentioned a few limitations of that sort.

You could of course just use X11 the way it's been available for the last year+, which is to say use it as a separate desktop. You can either terminate The OS X WM and use just the X11 desktop, or cycle between the two.

Well you could use a rooted X11 with XDarwin. But I think he was talking about using X11 prior to the login screen. That isn't possible. The user space has to be running, even if only in the background.
