well the graphics software that Maya released today isn't compatible with 10.2.3, but maybe it was written for 10.2.4?

Mr. Jobs also never mentioned anything about iChat in his little speel today, so I'm hoping there will be an overhaul in a 10.2.4 release.

I wouldn't be surprised. iChat and perhaps Address Book are in need of updates.

As much as I would love to see this, I don't think it will happen.

But Apple has shown us (today even!) that it is capable of surprises.

Still, I don't expect 10.2.4 for another 2 to 6 weeks, maybe even more.

I'm betting they wait a little, if only to give their bandwidth a little rest. All the activity today not only brought down the MacNN Forums but brought down Slashdot for a while! So I'm sure Apple was being hit hard - especially with all those Quicktime videos for their new stuff.

That doesn't mean anything, since those won't be shipping until late next month. Plus, that version must be a pre-release, since the Darwin version is still 6.3. 10.2.4 Darwin ver will be 6.4.

Finally, Apple has been on a fairly steady 5 to 6 week release cycle since 10.2.0 and I wouldn't expect that to change unless there were some major problems.

CMA: I could be wrong though and 10.2.4 will show up tommorow.

Thats true, and other pictures show that the 12" Powerbooks are running 10.2.3, so you never know what Apple is doing.

I thought I heard "two weeks" for the 12".

Well anyway we'll see the update somewhere between tomorrow and a late Feb. Hopefully it will have more than just compatibility tweaks and drivers for the brand new models. My MDD has sleep and panic issues that need to be resolved ASAP.

Well, they've posted iCal 1.02 to Software Update in addition to the standalone download, for those of you who don't have it yet...

They're busy little beavers over there right now.

hey guys remember that steve said these new macs WONT boot into OS9..

so they finally have a NEW BIOS/Firmwear that doesn't support it, and it would make sense that you will need to run an updated version of 10.2

its not that strange either, with they released the quicksilver's in 2001, they wouldn't boot into OS9, but needed 9.1.

I found this the hard way when my new tower at werk went 'bad' and it wouldn't boot from a Norton disc, and no other macs had work had CD burners, so I had to take the CD home and burn a custom OS9.1 Quicksilver Norton Rescue CD

Anyways.. we wont need this update unless it's on a new ioBook (ionized aluminum), but then, if you have an ioBook, you would have 10.2.4..

AND chances are.. 2 weeks to a month from now.. when these ioBooks ship.. they'll have a 10.2.5 all geared up for us.. with a new safari..

heh, the keynote didn't run into any type of capacity issues, neither did apple or it's download sites because they use akamai. akamai is also used for software updates.

macnn is simply hosted by 1 or 2 machines in a small ISP, with akamai apple has almost an inifinite amount of capacity.

That's not true. It's not that they're writing code so that it won't boot OS 9; they're just no longer writing drivers for their new hardware to make sure OS 9 will boot on them. They have to write new stuff to make OS 9 bootable.

Just thinking...but if machines won't be able to boot into 9 anymore, would Apple finally enable Journaling on its machies right out of a box? Just curious what you guys think.

The 17s have 10.2.4, but that's a month away at least. So one may not see an update for a while, and even if the Albooks have them, doesn't mean that there'll be an update for everyone else.

OS 9 works fine on journaled partitions, so no, removing 9 has nothing to do with making journaling the default.

I don't recall Apple ever bumping the version number of OS X just for new hardware. New hardware has always just used a newer build of an existing version. Since they are running 10.2.4, we'll be seeing it soon, too.

More than likely it features updated and/or new frameworks necessary for the new iLife updates which are already installed on the demo machines.

I think everyone's overlooking an obvious part of 10.2.4- support for Firewire 800. As far as I can tell, that's why it would be necessary and running only on those 17 inch PBG4s at the moment.

What about the G4s that had 9.2 on them? Didn't they have 9.2 before everything else?

maybe he is playing that trick on us, tomorrow never comes and yesterday was never here. You all know that game! just look on macnn tomorrow, and when tomorrow becomes today then you will just have to look again tomorrow.. so basically he can't be wrong with this post because eventually it will come out tomorrow. just not today tomorrow.

Alias released MayaPLE based on Maya Complete 4.5 for OS X. Maya doesn't run reliably on 10.2.3 on machines with GeForce Ti and GeForce 3 cards as well on PowerBooks with Radeon M3 and M6 chipsets (I can vouch for the PowerBook compatibility problems). Alias says there is no known workaround and points to Apple for an update (which, BTW, I hope is sooner than later).

From what I gather they will probably be shipping the 12" powerbooks with 10.2.3 in a week or so's time, as the OS will already support everything inside it.

With the 17" model they are probably going to have to release it with 10.2.4 as they will need support for the new firewire 800.

Well that's what I think anyway...

"January 20, 2003 - Updated and Expanded Earlier this week, Apple seeded pre-release versions of the v10.2.4 update to Mac OS X, both client and server. Both seeds of 10.2.4, known internally as "Jaguar Pink," were numbered build 6I13.

While the seed notes didn't include a list of bug fixes, Apple Developer Relations suggested that testers focus on ATI/NVidia software, audio software, CoreGraphics, printing, the Finder (including file search), Sherlock, and the HIToolbox, or High Level Toolbox. For the server release, Apple provided more specific testing requests in several different categories, including directory services, web and mail, file services, Workgroup Manager, and NetBoot/Network install.

The first public appearance of 10.2.4 was during Macworld Expo in San Francisco last week. The demo units of the new 17-inch PowerBooks had build 6J11 of 10.2.4 installed, as the update includes support for the GeForce4 Go series as well as the 17-inch's ambient light sensor. Tests of the seed show minor updates to many apps and utilities, as well as the addition of a Bluetooth Setup Assistant and Bluetooth Serial Utility.

Multiple sources have also suggested that Apple is increasing the security with which it releases its developer seeds. Both sources say that some sort of IP tracking is involved, but we haven't been able to confirm the specifics.

Over the course of the past month, sources have also provided direction on some of the other improvements which will be found in 10.2.4 and the updates that will follow it.

One issue is a privileges problem that plagues Mac OS X Server. Prior to 10.2.3, when copying files and folders to an OS X Server, the files would assume the wrong privileges. The 10.2.3 update fixes this AFP problem, allowing files to inherit privileges properly, but still not folders. An informant says that the rest of the bug fix should be included in 10.2.4.

Apple also has been writing drivers for a number of popular sound and video cards. On the audio front, clear changes are underway. The OS X group has identified that users want higher-resolution 24-bit audio, with a 196 KHz sampling rate. With the release of 10.2.3, support was added for SoundBlaster Extigy, and as of last month, work was nearly complete on Audigy and Audigy 2 drivers. This may be present in 10.2.4, but if it isn't slipped in, it will certainly be a part of the v10.3 Panther upgrade. Initial support for Audigy 2 will probably be limited at best, however.

As for video cards, Apple is planning to support several workstation-quality graphics cards in 10.3, that weren't previously supported, including full support for NVidia Quadro 980, 900, and 750XGL. Support will also be added for ATI's top-end Fire GL series.

Apple is also working to stabilize the IOKit, specifically the SAM implementation -- "SCSI Architecture Model." In 10.2.2, throughput topped out at about 110MB/sec, while OS 9 topped out at 210MB/sec. With 10.2.3, this was improved to 190MB/sec. Many are hoping for Apple to install PCI-X slots on its motherboards -- on the PC side, one can get over 518MB/sec of throughput."

That was my understanding. The rest of us may only see 10.2.5 or whatever.

I don't recall Apple ever bumping the version number of OS X just for new hardware.
I think they do this frequently for anything but speed bumps, but then again, I don't buy apple hardware every time it's updated/announced. Remember all the system enablers in the days of System 7.5? Almost one for every different Mac!

Yeah I remember back when every Mac used a different version of 7.5 and I can tell you this isn't 1995 nor will Steve Jobs ever let something like that happen. Simpilicity and clarity. That is his motto. We will see 10.2.4 on all Macs. There are enough bugs to fix to deserve a whole minor update.

yep, i agree. If they need to upgrade just few drivers they can always put them online with software update, without the need for a full OS update package.

I would rather download a whole OS update package every so often when they have a bunch of things updated. I hate doing an update every other day like you do with Windows.

This also effect Novell NetWare 6 servers using AFP and NFAS.

Please get this fixed ASAP. This is a major bug that I cannot believe is still around.

Currently at work, if I create a folder on my MacOSX box, then the entire eDirectory tree gets Supervisor priveledges to my folder! I cannot even explain the massive security hole this is creating. I have over two hundred users using 10.2.3 and every damn folder they create is getting out of hand.

At least they got the file thing figured out in 10.2.3, because before it would assign supervisor rights to all files that were modified.

I am kinda shocked there has not been more about this, we would have hung M$ out to dry on something as huge as this one.

Well, back to hitting Software Update waiting for this patch to get out.

oh, but if we got updates every day or week just think of how many threads we'd have in here saying the latest version is a lot "snappier."
