Mr Jobs announced keynote yesterday and said that he had been using it in front of us for a year
That suggests a mature product
If I remember correctly he said that it had been in development for 18 months!

What I also noticed was that he started his run-through of OS X products with "top of the heap" Office v.X - that was no accident
We know that microsoft was getting huffy before about slow os x adoption but now things are apparently better for both them and os X
however
I can't help but think that the "top of the heap" comment was an 'official' endorsement of microsoft to diminish the implications of apple encroaching on their turf - more and more

Now I can't imagine that keynote - an office suite product - ws developed alone
we previously discussed the idea of an upcoming iOffice

Jobs didn't say whether keynote was built from the ground up or if it is an apple version of something like StarOffice Impress

There must be more and I think that it is only because of a matter of timing that we haven't seen it or heard of it yet

The 18 months may have just been to come out with the most amazing presentation software ever. I've just been using Keynote, and it is really something. The way it effortlessly combines ease of use with incredible power, really good performance, and featuers galore is actually startling.

They have some nice optins now:

The "iOffice" thread suggests an osx native version of OpenOffice.org.
We now have X11 for OSX which is a big step towards a quasi native OpenOffice.org.

The interesting point is their adoption of khtml for Safari. on http://dot.kde.org someone already investigated webcore:

....snip....
I downloaded the Webcore package and nosed around in it--is it really what it seems like
it is? Did Apple do a QT-ectomy-runaround? It looks like nothing less than a full-scale
replacement for QT written in objective C......
....snip....

That could mean that we will see Appleworks 7 based on another interesting KDE OSS project: KOffice! (http://www.koffice.org)

I'm pretty confident we will see something nice this year. :-)

Are you suggesting that Keynote is a branded and reworked version of PowerPoint? Or of part of StarOffice? It wouldn't take 18 months to develop if it was.

Anybody who's used it care to comment on the innards?

Keynote is a completely in house piece of software- as Jobs said he had it written for himself and has been using/testing it for over 12 months.

I would be surprised if Apple didn't tell M$ not to bother with any new IE ports to keep everyone happy. I'm sure they woud have been pissed if they would have been working on a major port and find out that Apple beat them to the punch with Safari.

I would love to see an Apple iOffice based on Open Office. I think this is the only way that anyone is ever going to beat M$... Make the thing FREE or almost FREE.

For a beta, Safari is very solid. Hats off to the Apple team working on this. Now if we could only get a iCal like upgrade for iChat, we would be looking great.

Counting down the days until iLife...

I'd be more surprised if M$ willingly complied with that.

No. Keynote is not anything from KDE. It is based in part on Concurrence, which was acquired along with Blue Fish Labs by Apple.

nobody has brought up the fact that Appleworks used to have presentation software built into it.

what does Keynote's release say about future Appleworks? i doubt they'd release two pieces of software that could do the same thing. hopefully, AW will now be more focused on word-processing.

Keynote is probably not based on concurence. Unless Apple purchased Lighthouse Design assets from Sun. Lighthouse design had a whole suite of office applications.

Although the project leader at Lighthouse design for Concurrence (presentation software) is now in the employ of Apple computer.

Well, I ordered a copy already. It even shipped and is supposed to arrive today! (I love next day shipping from Apple by ground.)

How did it come to this? Goodbye PowerPC. | sensory output

Oh, it's lovely. So simple to just sit down and just figure out.

I had a 10 slide show up in no time, filled with transparency, QT movies and images rolling in all over. The cube feature is the best.

I see a presentation set up that each chapter or section of it has the cube roll up or down. Then, within each topic, it rotates side to side, then back up again for the next topic.

Now, if we can only get that web flash site Steve had up (music creation) integrated into iTunes/Photo/Movie/DVD to sample a mix realtime while playing back your movie/slideshow to create a custom song with timed beats/effects.

All of Apple's applications have horid documentation. Lets hope the KHTML based Safaria takes over as the parser for the help system.

The Keynote documentation say I can import Flash. I dragged it in and it gives me a file with a question mark. How can I make it play or show properly?

Also how can I make a MP3 file play throughout the entire presentation? It stops as soon as I go to the next slide.

Has anyone figured it out yet?

Thanks.
