Ok...the title is an exageration of sort. Not all developers are inept. Some produce very good products.

But it seems Apple is frantically writing new software to fill in holes left by developers. Apple has left developers a lot of time for them to write good apps but I think Apple got tired of waiting and wrote their own.

All the browsers on Mac had a share of problems (yes, even Chimera believe it or not...probably the browser with the most problems, IMO, even if it's crazy fast). So Apple wrote their solution...and it seems to be a success.

Lets face it...there was no good presentation app on Mac. Anyone could have written a nice presentation app that used Quartz...but no...it didn't happen. Apple wrote their own. PowerPoint? Puhleaze!

iCal, iChat? I think iChat was to fill in the 'easy-to-use and bloat-free IM app' category which was non-existant until Apple wrote it. iCal was written probably because there was no good calendaring app except for maybe Entourage which was part of a ridiculously expensive $400+ package up until only recently (And Windows user say we're crazy for buying expensive Macs. )

iMovie and iDVD...no app even come close to this...again, Apple pioneered this category on Mac.

I mean c'mon! Apple left doors wide open...but they can't leave the doors wide open forever. I'm glad Apple is providing the missing software! Apple seriously deserves a pat on the back.

DVD Player provided by Apple is cool but it's somewhat lacking (Apple leaving the door open?) I have yet to see anyone work on a good DVD Player with 5.1 support or 7.1 support (now that cards are out for this.) VLC is ok but the interface is really bad.

It's only a matter of time until DVD Player is updated and close doors for developers trying to create a good DVD player.

You rock, Apple!

I love the fact that Apple writes great software, but I also want to see more companies like Omni and Panic that write great stuff as well.
I'm getting very, very tired of bad carbon ports (read Macromedia Studio amongst others)

Yup it is.

I think Apple is trying to weed out the developers that don't really care. By providing very good apps, they're upping the standards. 3rd-party-developers either have to produce better or fade away.

It's harsh...it might be what kills Apple's relationship with developers in the end...but, heck, it had to be done. I'm also tired of bad carbon ports.

It's a nice combination of carrot and stick from Apple. Jobs praises Microsoft as he does for the digital hub what "MS did for office productivity"; tweaks MS in their Achilles heel (PowerPoint); entices developers with more Unix stuff like X11, and even does both carrot and stick in one go with Safari -- throwing down the gauntlet to other web browsers and at the same time open sourcing it. And finally showing that a truly Unix based graphical browser can be done. Linux take note.

A major downfall of Open Source is the fact that you have too many chiefs and not enough Indians (an old saying that rings true). You can do amazing things when you are pressured from your boss.

It?s easier when you have one person with a distinct vision telling you exactly what they want and you developing that. Safari doesn?t try to be EVERYTHING like some of these browsers. It?s slim, fast and works well for what it was designed to do.

That being said, I?m glad to see Apple pick up an Open Source project that had already done most of the work and add to the project (significantly in this instance)

I would L-O-V-E to see a KOffice port or for Apple to open source AppleWorks! That would say something about Apple and Open Source!
