Mail intermittently freezes entire interface

When I have mail.app open, my entire interface will completely freeze except for the mouse pointer for up to a full minute. It does not seem to matter how many other apps I have running or what they are. This will happen 10 - 15 times during the course of a normal work day. I have trashed the file Hard Drive:Users:gshields:Libraryreferences:com.apple .mail.plist and it seems to be better for a few hours and then the problem starts happening all over again. Anyone had this problem and have any idea about a fix? Is there any other information I need to provide?
