Hey all,
I am having a bit of trouble with my brand spanking new Ibook. I cant seem to get itunes to add songs to its playlist that are on my server which is running mandrake 8.1 and has Samba 2.2.something running on it. Infact even though I have the Share on the server mounted I can not even see it in the Itunes file selection Dialogue.

Any help suggestions etc would be appriciated.

although it is a large playlist around 3700 songs.

I have my MP3s stored on a Unix server and mount it using NFS rather than SMB. This works fine. I can add all of the files to my iTunes library and add and remove them from playlists.

There were problems from some Apple iApps with NFS mounts under various flavours of OS X prior to 10.2. Notably iPhoto wouldn't allow export to them. It could be that there are similar restriction with SMB connections. You should be able to export your songs from the Linux box as an NFS share then mount it using something of the form:

nfs://linuxboxname/remote_directory

One thing to note is that there is no ability to specify a user to connect to the remote box as. It will connect using the UID and GID of you OS X user (501 and 20 by default) so you may need to look at permissions on the remote side.
