What kind of modem do you have? and who is your ISP? if your modem is v.92 compatable, and your ISP has v.92 access numbers you can gain a lot from that.
Living in the styx I had only dial-up or iDSL available to me, iDSL was $129/month and only 144K both ways. Soon the company went under after about 6 months of fine service. Around the same time my cable company said it would offer Cable Modem access shortly.
So instead of signing up with a new iDSL company (and another 12 month contract) I decided to get Dial-Up for the time being.
I went with Syracuse.net because they offer v.92 access numbers in my area.
With my first ISP (bellsouth.net) who wasn't v.92 the best I could get was around 26-28K with syracuse and the v.92 script I get a consistent 45.3K and around 4-6K on downloads, the best part is with the new compression surfing forums and such feels just as fast as my iDSL.
Also, when i get a phone call a screen pops-up (with caller ID) and I can choose to answer it while my internet connection is on hold. Then when im done, click resume and away I go.
Dialing-in: After the first few calls the time to connect seemed to go doen to around 15 seconds! im still amazed
If you can't get ANY broadband, then v.92 is a nice little boost and some nice features... plus it sure beats $130/month!
