What the hell is this spymac thing that seems to have infiltrated itself into my Internet Explorer. Now, when I start IE, a login window for Spymac appears a few times and I have to hit cancel about 4 times before IE will load my home page. This is a new thing that started spontaneously and has never happened before. Is this some sort of Virus? I did a Sherlock and found nothing. Should I uninstall IE and reinstall it? Any ideas?

TIA

Another problem I have had, is that I can't access my POP Spymac mail. This really sucks, as I have just put up a lot of things on eBay, and I can't get my e-mail. It cut out about 10 last night, and is still not up.

Does anyone know what the deal is?

Uhh..WTF? I opened this thread, and I get the spymac dialog?? Huh??

I haven't been to Spymac on this computer in AGES. And I've never seen that before until I clicked on this thread. What is going on?

Kill your signature sunoxen!! It links to an image on Spymac's server, and that's what causing the login dialog - Spymac.com is down or something like that.

The original poster probably has spymac as the start page.

I know there's a java script to do something very similar. Check your start page prefs and if no change maybe delete your prefs. I don't think a cookie could do that, but maybe delete the spymac cookies in IE.

I didn't think the javascript could work on a mac, I've never used it, but have seen it listed (or something similar) at a script site.

Maybe it's related to their email service.

Doesn't IE have a subscriptions feature similar to OmniWeb's bookmark checking? If it does, then that is probably the problem.

Just checked. It does have a subscription feature. IE is probably checking the subscription when it loads which explains why you are seeing the authentication box before your homepage.

Some people have signatures and images hosted by Spymac. If you go to a thread(ie the powermac picture thread) that has an image linked to spymac, you will get that dialog since their server is down. If you go to spymac.com, you will get the same thing.

If you're replying to my response, then I know that. Thats why I said "before your homepage." If you're not replying to my response, then nevermind.

Click on the Safari application menu and you can block pop-ups.

lol it's spymac alright.

Many of us use spymac hosting for sigs, etc.

Everyone needs to kill their sigs, including me.

Just add an extra letter or two to the "IMG" tag so it just turns into text for the moment.

These aren't pop ups, I believe they are password dialogs. Also, Safari's pop up blocker blocks all pop ups, even java script links so i can't use it and i hope they fix that so it asks like it's suppose to (like Chimera)

off topic- Is it Steve's accent or what, how is Chimera pronounced?

chi-mer-a

ki-mair-a

Spymac is currently overhauling the background stuff on their website, it's been down for a week or more.

It's pronounced kai-mir-uh.

Also, the pop-up blocking functions like Chimera's in my experience. I can still view pop-up windows when they are a result of a link I clicked. For example, this link works in Safari with pop-up blocking enabled.

Me too!! I thought I was going nuts! And I don't have any images or sigs at Spymac. So how do we correct this problem with Spymac popping up and demanding for a password? I don't even come near the site and it still pops up (and pop-up blocker doesn't stop it).

Again.....someone else has an image/sig linked to spymac. This is not a popup. Spymac is down. This is not a safari problem. IE, netscape, chimera, etc do this too. It will be gone once spymac is back or people remove all there images linked to spymac.

Another cause for this problem is IE's subscriptions. When it goes to check for updates to the bookmarked site, it needs to authenticate.

You also get this problem if you added any of the IE customized buttons to your tool bar. They have...hmmm...had...a whole gallery of them from the contest they had a while back. If those are in your tool bar that will also bring up the login/password box.

As mentioned in the previous post, deleting the buttons I added, months ago, to the nav bar seemed to do the trick. They were buttons with the colorful logos of various sites, dragged up there.
