I performed the QT update to 6.1 tonight and now when I boot the machine it gets to the desktop but I cannot start any applications or open a disk or folder without the machine hanging with a beach ball. Virex scan continues and the finder clock even counts the seconds, but when I try to click on something - beachball. I have restarted with the install disc and ran first aid and have run fsck and the problem is the same. I even booted in safe mode and still have the issue. I'm dumbfounded.. I'v had to do a hard shutdown several times now. I dont want to have to re-install the system, what else can I do? I'd like to try getting rid of all login items or delete preferences but I cant get to the preference panels or folders... argh! help...

Are you sure it's because of QT? I installed it with no issue. Some people have had issues with Safari, have you used Safari? Do you have diskwarrior?

I do have safari, dl on the day it came out. I havent been using it since I heard about all the problems though. I do not have disk warrior. I have techtool 3.0x though. I have not tried to boot from it b/c i was not sure if the version of os9 on it was too far back for my DDR dual 867. If i could start from that disk i could at least delete some prefs. It stinks that the OSX install disk will not allow you to access the drive to delete items or move data. If I cannot get this to work, will an archive system re-install be my best bet? There's gotta be something i can do by starting up in single-user mode, but i know no unix.

Did you try holding down shift on startup?

Danger: After installing 6.1, I had the beach ball spin and freeze after the dock loaded but no folders etc. Rebooting sometimes got me in but froze after starting Navigator or Safari or system prefs etc. I was able to fix it by re-installing 10.2.3 (combined) update. Now all is well. To get to finder I started in Classic, moved all programs that I had set to start up in log-in under OS X, ie out of application folder so they wouldn't start, such as WeatherPop, Speed Start up, then reset permissions with disk utility, manage to restart to finder, used Internet Explorer to download 10.2.3 updater, and reapplied. Quick time 6.1 must play havoc with some sort of start up check the net function which freezes up eveything else. Installing 10.2.3 must re set something. QT 6.1 works fine now.

yep, tried holding shift - still did the same thing. I would love to start in 9 and do what MacWizard did - I just cant get to it - I don't think I have a disk I can boot from. I'm pretty sure my old tech tool 3.x cd wont work b/c it is on old version of 9 (havent tried yet though.) What can I go get at CompUSA taht will be worth buying that will at least let me boot? DiskWarrior? I'm thinking I am going to have to do an archive and install. Is this a wise choice or are things going to get crazy? I am afraid that some of the newer software I have will make the system go nuts when I boot into the downgraded software. I will of course be immediately upgrading to 10.2.3, but in the meantime I am not sure what would happen...

Ever since the 6.1 update was released I get an unexpected error when checking for updates on my TiBook. I wonder if it's related. Arggg.
