I was curious today where iPhoto was keeping my pictures on the HD.

I named a picture "chapstick"
and i imported it into iPhoto
Chapstick was saved into the Pictures Folder--iPhoto Library--2002 Folder--12 Folder--"Chapstick"

I don't understand this hierarchy?
I have a 2001 Folder and a 2003 folder and
I'm not sure why it didn't go into the 2003 folder.

Anyway, in the 2002 folder, their are 12 folder. It was placed in #12. In the #12 folder there were two folders (#03, #23). Chapstick went into #23. I'm not sure why?

Can someone explain what is happening here, i'm confused?

2002 = year
12 = day

aka: iPhoto Library/2002/12/image.ext
iPhoto Library/year/day/image

It's based on when your picture was taken, not when you named it. iPhoto (using modification dates when you imported your pictures) figured out when you actually took the picture and put it in the appropriate folders.

iPhoto looks for EXIF information embedded in the image to work out when the picture was taken. It uses this date to file the image into the structure. The reason it files by date is to try and ensure that no folder gets too many files in to become unmanageble.

My advice would be don't worry about the structure and don't use the images directly from the iPhoto Library folders. Doing so may cause problems.
