A couple of days ago, ALL of my menu extras started disappearing. I have about 6 items up there, and a few moments after logging in, they will all disappear. They will occassionally pop back up for a few seconds. But even when they do pop back up, none of the items are functional, then they simply disappear again in a few seconds. Checking/unchecking the showing of the menu extra in any of the item's preferences/control panel has no effect. In the case of iSync, I can check the box, but then when I reopen preferences it is unchecked again. In Sound CP, it won't even let me click it on. I have repaired permissions to no avail. I have 10.2.3 running, and the problem started sometime after installing Safari (although I'm not blaming it). I have a similarly configured iBook that is NOT exhibiting the problem. The only other thing I can think of that is possibly related is that I re-ordered the menu extras recently.

I have also tested other accounts on this machine, and none of the other accounts exhibit the problem. However, they also only have 2 menu extras loading (whereas my logon has about 6). On the surface, it would seem that if I could simply manage to turn some of them off, my problem might be alleviated. I am still unable to find a way to do so, though. Any attempts at checking/unchecking items to turn on/off menu extras has no effect at all.

Is there some .plist or something I can delete to clear out the preferences that might help? It is driving me crazy!!

Although this wasn't exactly burning up the charts, I thought I would post that I found the solution in the event that anyone else had a similar problem and ran across the thread.

The preference file that controls the menu extras is com.apple.systemuiserver.plist. The menu extras were detailed at the bottom of the file. What I found was that iAddressX had been duplicated (once at the beginning and once at the end). I suspect that happened when I reordered the extras recently. Since I had been meaning to get rid of that one anyway, I just deleted both tags about it, logged out, logged in, and my problem is resolved.

I'd like to add a 'general' note to this. In general, if there is a problem is OSX that a particular user's account has and other user accounts do not, then the problem is likely in the problem user's prefs.

I can safely say that every problem I've had which had the above noted symptoms was pref related. One time, my iBook was KP'n on logout of my account; however, my wife's account was fine. I moved the entire Prefs folder to the desktop and all was fine. Took about 15 minutes to get all my prefs and SN's back to normal, but all was working fine after that.
