Why is the option to verify permissions greyed out in Disk Utility?
I will no longer let me do this.

I just had the same problem a few minutes ago. I rebooted and I was able to fix the permissions. You could try rebooting and see if that works.

restarted, still won't
I even started off the install disk and did a disk repair and it's still greyed out.
Anyone know how to fix this or why it's doing this?

You sure you're selecting the drive icon in that list and not the HD icon itself? If so, I don't know what the problem could be....

And you are working wih the boot disk? You can only repair disk permissions on the boot disk.
Maybe download the standalone repair permissons from Apple?

Yo yo yo. Try this command:
Code:
sudo diskutil verifyPermissions /
And similarly, use repairPermissions to repair.

First, you have to authenticate with Disk Utility in order to make changes to a disk in this app. Make sure the lock icon in the bottom left of the window is unlocked. If not, click on the lock and authenticate (you must be an admin user to do so).
Second, you can only verify permissions on the boot volume.
Third, when I say "volume," I mean it. You do not select the hard drive, but the volume underneath it.
Good luck.
