Go to the 'Finder', menu and select 'Preferences'.
Then click on 'Always open new windows in column view'

BZZZT not done.
Even with that checked, when I open a dmg or reveal a file in the finder, like say with safari, it opens in icon view.
So again, does anyone know how to make all windows open in column view?

I guess it was the "Done" part that got me. like its all just so trivial and we're all just dumb since we didnt check the prefs. Well, we did, and it doesnt work for me or anyone I know. In fact this has been an issue for quite some time as evidenced by the flood of threads over the months pertaining to this flaw.

Yep, this is a personal peeve. If I drag something to my Applications button, a new column view wil pop up...but if it's to any OTHER button like Home, the normal window will open.
Annoying to the max.

iOliverC: first, be nice, we're all here to learn, help and build a community of sorts. As to answering your question, I have a similar issue and have partially solved it with a background AppleScript that checks any new window created and sets it to be in column view. A great site to look at AS help is http://macscripter.net/.
Good luck.

always open in column view is overidden when opening a dmg as a software developer may have a window background in the image. I know thats what most people are doing now.

Why does dragging something to the Home button bar always pop up a traditional folder, then? This has been happening ever since 10.2. Apple-3 does nothing to that window as far as I could tell.

The "Always Open in Column View" option has never worked for me either. I've sent numerous bug reports to Apple, ever since the check box first showed up, and they haven't fixed it yet...

I think the "always open in column view" only applies when opening a new Finder window from the File menu, or using cmd-N. Otherwise the window opens in the state in which it was last saved--like a .dmg does.
As others have said, I then just hit cmd-3 and that changes it instantly.

I think I've found an answer to the bickering here.
Each folder has it's own view prefs. (I believe it's the .DS_Store file that's invisible) In order to keep any particular folder in column view all the time, one must open ONLY THAT FOLDER, change it to column view, and then close it.
If you ever opened a folder from the Dock's contextual menu, it will open the folder with it's last known prefs.
It's a pain in the ass to do this for every folder, so my advice is to do it to the ones you'll open the most often. For instance: All the folders in your toolbar. Open them once, change themto column view, then close them immediately again. This should change their view so that any time you drag a file over the toolbar icon, the column view will appear.
Try it out, and let me know if it isn't working for you. It took a while, but I finally found it through trial and error.
