So why can't I watch Steve's Keynote stream in MacOS X but I _can_ in OS 9 on the same TiBook?

FWIW the TiBook is running the latest versions of OS X and QuickTime. And of course I can play all the QT stuff _except_ streams in OSX

BTW I love OS X and haven't booted into OS 9 for months. But I have to say, OS 9 is still quite a bit faster than OS X 10.2.3 on my TiBook I found it a bit ironic that I had to boot into OS 9 to hear Steve say that no new Mac will boot into OS 9 again.

that's very odd. The keynote worked VERY well on both of my systems. (even in the background with multiple applications going and while watching a DVD...

You may want to consider updating Quicktime to 6.1 if you haven't done so...

I've heard that changing your QT settings to UDP instead of http helps (this is in the transport settings).

Usually, it's the other way around.

Yeah, I can't view the Keynote either....using Quicktime 6.1 and 10.2.3 on a TiBook 667 DVI....the data just "times out" all the time.

Odd.

Odd.
Have you checked the transport settings in the QuickTime preference pane in System Preferences? Motly likely it's on UDP when it needs to be on HTTP for your network setup.

Thanks to every one for the help. I was already running QT6.1 in 10.2.3 BUT.. as serveral of you pointed out, QT was configured to use UDP. Changing the QuickTime Connection Transport Setup to HTTP fixed it.

BTW I am certain that I was able to view the last keynote stream in OS X and AFAIK I have never changed these settings so... it _appears_ that one of the recent OSX/QuickTime updates 'adjusted' this setting for me Furthermore, my wife's new PowerMac had the same problem and I _know_ that I have never made any changes to the QuickTime Connection Transport Setup on that Mac.

FWIW Prior to posting this question, I did a search using "QuickTime Stream" on 4 different Mac OSX/Applications forums and did not find this tip.

Thanks again

You probably didn't watch the MPEG-4 stream the last time.

I'm pretty sure I did beacuse I remember being impressed with the quality

But now that I think about it, I did a clean install of Jaguar since that keynote and of course my wife's new PowerMac came with Jaguar installed. So it _may_ be that Jaguar simply defaults to UDP.

FWIW it would have been nice if QuickTime had suggested adjusting the Transport Setting instead of just timing out and leaving the user wondering whether it was the stream or QT's config on their Mac.

Thanks to all - asxless

The protocol used to stream a movie is independent of the compression codec.

Yes, UDP is the default since it is the better protocol. However, firewalls and natd can prevent its use.
