In your Universal Access Preference panel, check to see if you have mouse keys 'on" button checked off under the Mouse tab. This will disable the numeric keypad. Check the off button and see if it works for you.

Sorry, but this made me chuckle...

This happened to me the first time I plugged in the Apple Pro keyboard I'd just treated myself to - thought I was going mad. Nearly sent it back, saying there was a fault.

You're welcome....I did the same thing, and had to search the web to find a solution to undo what I did...haha
I was playing around and wanted to hear the typewriter click sounds when I typed, which was cool. I tired of it and decided to turn it off, but I guess I forgot one of the prefs that I changed.
Never even noticed that my numeric pad was not working for a long time, and by then I didn't associate it with the Universal access.

I sent a serious nasty gram to apple about this a while ago.

To fix your keyboard, go into Mouse settings for universal access and turn off keyboard navigation.

If you do a search, you can probably find the big ass post I made about how the entire universal access control panel is complete crap!
