The date is 1/13/02 right now and I just downloaded the Safari update (Software Update found it automatically for me).

After a bit of browsing once the update was installed, I noticed a bit of a slowdown on these forums (threads wouldn't open up but other sites came in fine). I figured it might just be because lately, there have been problems with the macnn forums since Macworld. Even earlier today I was not able to access macnn.

Anyway. So I rebooted. Now Safari won't even open up. I get an error message saying that it has unexpectedly quit.

Is there a way in OSX for me to roll back to the previous version of an app before an update was applied? I'm accustomed to being able to do this in Windows.

I know I could just delete the whole damn thing and download it again, but I'm hoping there's a way that I can just rollback without having to go through all that. I'm also thinking I should hold off on installing every update that comes out until some I'm sure most of the annoying bugs are fixed. I guess I'm just really hopeful for Safari to so well...

Thanks

Are you trying to open Safari via Dock or are trying to open Safari directly?

Via the Dock. After I initially downloaded it last week, I dragged it to my Applications folder first, then to my Dock.

Taking your implied suggestion, I just tried opening it from my Applications folder and got the same result.

Trash the prefs file and you'll be fine:

home/Preferences/com.apple.safari.plist

Wow, that worked. Thanks!

Would you mind explaining to me how this fix worked? Sorry if it's a dumb question but I'm still getting accustomed to working in OSX.

Thanks again.

Edit
Well, it happened again, at the same time of day no less. I deleted my preferences file again and it's back up. Weird.

Does anyone have other ideas??

Thanks

I saw a report of someone with the old version still in their trash causing a conflict. Empty your trash?

Mount the disk image and try running Safari from there, if it runs, trash anything you have in /Applications (Safari I mean) and then empty the trash before dragging Safari from the disk image to /Applications. I had the same problem trying to copy Safari over without deleting the old version first. For whatever reason it refused to launch. I trashes Safari, emptied my trash and then copied it and everything worked okie dokie. Try doing it in that order and see if it works.

It's also possible that you have a corrupted history, bookmarks, or downloads file. Try removing these from ~/Library/Safari/. It could also be possible that there is corruption in the cache. Try removing ~/Library/Caches/Safari/ and ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.WebKit/.

I had the same problem... I just trashed the entire program and preferences and then reinstalled it... not much of a solution, but it worked.

Hey folks,

thats not really a safari problem, things like that kann happen to any of your applications.
The reason seems to be corrupted prefference files.

If you create a new user without admin rights, he can access all those applications....

Reinstalling OSX doesn't solve the problem for long time
