Well when you put it like that... Also, it's 1 e-mail which doesn't work half the time = $100

Except that it's not 1 email, it's also a ton of other things.
Don't buy .mac if all you want is email.

yeah we all know, but 80% of itools users just cared about the email account. Jobs gave the number of .mac suscribers at the keynote; he sold us a weak number with a *convincing* smile. (and that at the $49 special introduction offer)
BTW, out there you can get much more than what .mac brings for $100, like domain names and script/database support for your web.
i only wanted to point out that iLife requires much more development and engineering hours than .Mac, yet it's $50 vs $100/a year

Ah, it's $50 (not $60) and that's for iDVD which has always been a paid upgrade. Apple is throwing the other iApps on the same disc for you and calling it iLife.
And when you troll, it's better to do some research first, otherwise you look like an

Actually it's 1 e-mail plus useless Backup, useless Virex for not just $100...but $100/year.

You mean there are still people crying about .Mac? Wow. It amazes me how difficult it is for some people to grasp the concept of free will. Oh well, their loss.

Don't buy .mac if all you want is email.
Then Apple should sell email-only accounts.
This thread is correct to say that .Mac is overpriced, although this is nothing new.

BTW, the $100 for .Mac isn't for the cost of developing .Mac. It's for the cost of running .Mac. So, you can't really compare the cost between these two products the same way.

Maybe if half of you wankers complaining about the cost of .Mac wouldn't have signed up for 10 .Mac accounts and large files for public download that alloted to gigs of bandwidth that was FREE to you, we wouldn't be in this mess.
I paid for .Mac and I use it. At loss for better words:

The issue of .Mac being overpriced is relative. I find it very reasonable. I use it for more than email. I happily pay the fee for what I use, and I find it to be a good deal. Plus, as an added bonus, I'm supporting the computer company that I make my living on.
So no, this thread is not correct in saying that .Mac is overpriced.

I don't use the .mac email account, except for sending feedback back to Apple, but use the backup, homepage and idisk quite a lot.

I think [APi]TheMan is spot on about people getting ten .mac accounts and using them to host files a la Geocities back in the day. If you browse around versiontracker you can usually find a couple apps that don't work because they link to a file on a .mac account.
Besides .mac isn't a one time development cost like the iLife apps. Every time you check your .mac e-mail or upload a file to your 100MB of disk space it costs money. They're charging $8.33 a month for 100MB of disk space, 15MB of mail space, a decent backup program, and a fairly useless AV app. That isn't so bad. If you want .mac for just e-mail you're wasting your money though I think Apple ought to offer and e-mail only .mac membership for a lower price (say $20/yr).
If Apple had to host your movies you made in iMovie or sent you a monthly supply of DVDs to burn with iDVD iLife would have a recurring charge. Since iLife's apps all run on your resources they don't need to charge a recurring fee like .mac needs.

If Apple started charging $20,000 for a tower then you would have the free choice not to buy it, but you would still be mightily pissed off, as many people are about .Mac. So quit being condescending.
I think this calls for a:

I think Apple should have charged everyone for the new versions of iPhoto, iMovie, and iDVD. There are huge development costs for these products, and all you whiners who don't want to pay got your way.
Unfortunately, Apple today is supposed to announce quarterly earnings with some analysts predicting a loss! Apple may have a strong user base, but it has to be a user base that buys stuff in order to survive.
Everytime you think you are getting ripped off, just remember how the guys on the other side play: pay $500 for new copy of Office XP, pay $250 just to upgrade to Office XP, pay $200+ for a new copy of Win XP Professional, have every piece of software technology linked to one another so that you have to buy more MS products for increased functionality, soon to be Palladium initiative (good bye MP3s that you can transfer freely on computers you own), DRM, DRM, DRM. These are all things that Apple is not, so think hard next time you think Apple is scavenging for nickels and dimes.

How do you even get here at MacNN forums, post threads and replies? Do you do it at work or at school/college wasting the bandwidth there? Do you even have an ISP account at home? A computer? Why are you whining about an email account anyway?
My advice:
1. Get a life.
2. Get a job.
3. If you don't have one get your own computer.
4. Find a local or reliable ISP...guess what...you get a FREE email address all your own! Maybe even free web space too!
5. Shut up, there are hundreds of alternatives to Apple's .Mac services...
You really sound like a cheapskate to me.

The major thing about this email is..
1. You have SMPT server for sending email from anywhere.
2. You have the option of webmail
3. You have (or will do soon) have intergration between you computers email addresses and the ones in your webmail.
Oh and the iDisk is usefull as easy to use (on broadband at least).
I also get to backup all my important data I have selected automatically. For this I personally am willing to pay. As in the UK I pay less than a pound a week. And even after it's rise less than 2. My weekly outlay on coke or milk is easily double that!!!!
Does this mean milk is to expensive?
Cheers Edwin
