Is there a way to change the search engine in safari toolbar?

Living in Britain I'd like the google search bar in safari to search on google.co.uk rather than the American site, is this possible? being able to change it to other search engines would be cool as well.

Looks like impossible w/o the safari source code ( no, not the WebCore source code ).
Email me if you have it though

I'm in the same situation, everytime I do a search in the safari field, I have to change the resulting google query URL to .co.uk instead of .com and then select UK and then hit search again.
I've looked through all of the Safari app for a string or resource which specifies google.com but found nothing. I guess we need to submit a feature request and wait.

The way the strings are encoded in the Safari binary:
...it looks to me like there is built-in support for using different Google search pages. I'm not sure if there is a way to set this in the prefs, or what... but clearly they have thought that people would want to do this.
If I have time, I will look a bit more into it, maybe there is an unused preference...

It's not possible yet - the WebSearchManager, at the moment, uses a compile-time constant. It looks like this is planned functionality not yet extant.

Question... what does using a local google.com site gain you? News relevant to your country? I'd assume the search results would be identical no matter which country-branded google you use?
I'm just curious...

Speed. Here in Australia, ping times to the US don't tend to get lower than 300 ms; couple that with the fact that most people are still on dialup and every bit counts
...mind you, google.com and google.com.au have the same IP address, so it doesn't exactly matter in this case.

The results are the same for a standard google search, but there is a handy button that limits it to UK only searches. I don't know how they split it up, but it does seem to return UK-relevant results.
However, I use both settings for different things, so I'd like to see a customisable menu in the search box (a bit like the one in Mail) to select different engines and types of search. Hopefully this will make it into the 1.0 release...

I was really happy to input queries in Japanese and have it automatically come up in google.co.jp

Google
Google UK
