I'm thinking of buying a 12" PowerBook to use on the road. On my PowerMac at home I have become used to having a three-button mouse with a scroll wheel. The scroll wheel is great for large web pages or long papers.

Now since I want to use my PowerBook mainly on the train or in the plane I'm not even thinking of using a mouse with it. I don't mind not having the second button (ctrl-click) but I will probably really miss my scroll wheel.

I was thinking if I couldn't emulate the behavior on the trackpad. Let's say hold down ctrl and option and just move the finger up or down on the trackpad, that's close enough. Does anybody here know of a hack or extension for Jaguar that would give me that functionality? Would USB Overdrive let me do that?

Another alternative would be to get a Griffin PowerMate and program that to be usable as a scroll wheel (you can even have one act as a second button, though I've found it's a little unwieldy in that function). I have one; they're small enough to fit in a bag, and they work great.

But a word of warning if you go that route: never unplug it while the machine is asleep. You'll KP when the machine wakes up, every time, even if you plug it back in.

But you just KNOW that's gonna happen sooner or later. Plus they don't sit on your lap that easily.

I like my powermate, but ucontrol is one of those "how did I live without this?" addons.
