Why do I ask? Well it seems that Safari uses pseudo-tabs to switch between browser window and bookmark window. The nice thing is that the toolbar UI isn't dynamic - it's always a nice little book.

One of the biggest problems with tabs is how to keep track of them/name them with the long web page names that come up.

What if Apple implemented a permanent widget living, say, next to the bookmark book, that gave access to a set number of tabs?

They could change appearence to indicated whether they had any content or were in the process of loading, but wouldn't contain much more. (at most, maybe, the Favicon for a site). Anyway, I'm just trying to get a handle on how many tabs Apple would need to allow in such a set up, as the interface would need to be more static.

Further, the command-1 command-2 etc. could be switched to change tabs, rather than only unfolder-ed favorites.

Finally, as the number would be limited, there'd have to be some sort of warning about all the tabs being full at some point.

---------

disclaimer: I'm not a tab user myself - maybe people need the truncated names of sites in which case this discussion would be moot.

4 to 5, and I never lose track of what's where. There one of the best things to happen to web browsing ever.
Despite the objections of Guy Smiley, et al, they're always optional and on top of that (a lesson that needs to be hammered home repeatedly it seems) no one stays a newbie forever.

Also, I love the iTunes like Bookmarks management, so nice instead of being cramped into some stupid Drawer.

I usually open about 10-15 at once and then read, hitting cmd-w along the way, until the window closes.

When I'm in Chimera, I usually use about 2-3 windows, with an average of four tabs per window. The windows provide higher-level organization for the tabs, which I use for things like separate forum threads.

Depends on how many interesting threads are in a certain area of the forums. Usually 10+ that I just look at. respond if necessary, and close out.

For those with Wintel boxes, try Netcaptor - I've been using it for years and never upgraded. It has a very very efficient implementation (In My Humble Opinion) of the notorious Tabs™ . Its what I have been waiting all these years for, for the Mac.

Features that still make it the most convenient (if not the prettiest) browser I've used and which I hope will be implemented within Chimera are:

1. Fast switching bet tabs with cntrl-tab (or alt-tab, my fingers know which!)

2. The option to set ALL windows (pop-ups; _blank; etc) to open in tabs in the background.

3. A setting for domain completion eg: cntrl-enter = www+.com and shift-enter = www+.net (up to 4 or so settings).

4. Option for externally clicked urls (from email for example) to always open in the backround on a new tab.

5. Drag and Drop onto tabs

6. Indicators to show which tabs are still loading, which are completely loaded, and which are download but rendering.

7. The ability to save a group of websites as a "Captorgroup" that will open the whole group into a series of tabs. Big benefit - one click to launch all my fave technews websites and while I'm reading on the first page - the others are loading in the background. I just switch when I see the indicator showing "loaded."

It runs on top of IE in some way I don't understand, but whatever, it just makes browsing easy and you forget about the browser itself, and just surf.

Chimera is my main browser now on the mac, but on the pc (when I have to use it ) I only use that.

This one is already in Chimera. I don't remember the command to do it off the top of my head, unfortunately. It's very nice; when I use Chimera I have my own tech-news group that I keep in my Location Bar.

You can also Get Info on any bookmark folder and convert it into a tab group. You can also go the other way, converting tab groups into folders; that's how my Howdah Chimera -> Safari bookmarks converter imports tab groups over as folders.

I've also heard rumors that it's possible to set a tab group as your Home page. I haven't figured out how to do it yet, though.

How many tabs?

As many as needed - for me, the whole point of tabs is to keep all the pages in one movable, resizable window, instead of cluttering my desktop with multiple windows requiring individual attention.

This can easily result in 12+ tabs momentarily, but it's still much better than the 12+ windows I used to have.

well it looks like over 80 percent of you would be satisfied with a limit of say, 10 tabs.

So apple puts ten "tab squares" just to the right of the bookmark icon in the favorites bar. Each one looks different depening on whether it's loading, full, or empty. Each one can be accessed by hitting command-number (1-0).

(Of course you can bookmark tab sets, and open folders of bookmarks as tab sets).

Everybody happy? (besides those that would use more than 10 tabs)
