I'm running OS 10.2.3 on a G4 400. My problem arises when trying to download some, not all file from the web. I'm using IE 5.2 with Speed Download. The problem is that when I click on some files to download, the finder is launched to try to handle the download. In the past I have used to the contextual menu to manually choose Speed Download to take over. But, trying to download Apple's Developer Tools Dec. 2002, I don't have the option in the contextual menu. The finder is always launched, no matter what I do. The real problem is that the finder prompts me to find were to download the file to, I tell it and it doesn't download anything. Either that happens or the finder is brought to the front and I get a spinning beachball. Anyone seen this and know how to either take download privilages away from th finder, or get the finder to download correctly?

Your best bet would be to set something other than the Finder as your default FTP helper app. Since you have IE 5.2, you can actually do this from IE's Preferences. Otherwise, you'd have to use something like Vince or MoreInternet.

Isn't that wierd? Setting helper apps for different protocols is an integral part of OSX, but the only way you can configure it by default is from IE. This is an even bigger pain for Safari users, since Safari has no FTP support of its own; if you don't change the FTP helper app, all of your FTP downloads get passed to the Finder.

Hey, thanks alot. I had the default ftp as Transmit, but IE would launch Ithe finder anway. Now I've changed it to Speed Download and it seems to be working. Is there a way to set preference/ trouble shoot the finders ftp program? It seems awfully hidden to me. Were is the program the finder uses, or is it pert of the finder itself?
