I'm on cable with DHCP connection. In system prefs I gave my Mac the name "MDD_Jetblast" and sometimes my terminal shows up correctly like:

Code:
MDD_Jetblast%
But sometimes it displays the name I get from my DHCP server which looks like:

Code:
HispeedDHCPclient123-123-123-123%
where 123-123-123-123 is my IP (123.123.123.123). I don't care about the name my cable ISP gives me. I'd prefer to see the name I gave my Mac.

It may seem irrelevant, but it's really a pain when I'm doing ssh remote logins and suddenly I don't know where I am anymore. One Mac is maybe

Code:
HispeedDHCPclient123-123-123-123%
and the other

Code:
HispeedDHCPclient123-123-123-124%
Great difference. I'd prefer something like:

Code:
MDD_Jetblast%
and

Code:
El_cheapo_eMac%
Does anybody here know why it seems like random changing between one name and the other? Any idea how to get it to show up with the name I gave it in the system prefs?

Edit the /etc/hostconfig file and change the line near the top that reads:

HOSTNAME=-AUTOMATIC-

to

HOSTNAME=MDD_JetBlast

Thanks for the info. I should have thought of that quick fix.

Can you tell me why the "automatic" setting seems to change at random times?
