I can see it in the Network Browser, and mount it, but once I click on the server icon it disappears from the desktop. However, the IP adress still appears when I type ls in /Volumes/
And then I can no more connect to that server until I reboot.
strange...

I don't have a solution to your issue, I need one too. But would like to ask for the help of those using XP with Jaguar on their home network.

I have a machine running XP Home edition and have not been succesful in connecting my mac with it. The PC now boots in Win 2000 and I can use it as advertised as the PC and Mac connects to each other with no issues. The XP resides in another partition and am still waiting for something that might point me to a solution.

I did a reinstall of Jaguar on my mac and tried booting the PC on XP. And wow, to my surprise my mac now sees the XP machine and the XP sees Jag. I tried mounting the shares on Mac and was succesful and did the same with the PC. All seems well finally. But, the minute I started fiddling with the Mac and the PC so I can do some printer sharing (which is actually why I have the machine in the first place), the next time I connected the mac and the PC, Jag now gave me this -36 error and for its turn, XP wont see the mac in its workgroup. I could try and still connect the XP machine (by typing the IP) but because printer sharing is the primary reason for this network, I am again stumped.

The XP had my full name in its user account, so what I tried to do was (before I continued cofiguring the mac to create the printer connection via Samba) to shorten it to match my user account on the mac. All permssion seemed to have changed and it wont allow me to conect anymore.(The reason for shortening is so I can use the device uri using this pattern- smb://username:yourpassword@workgroup/sharename/printer which was succesful in Win 2000)

Any suggestion is welcome. Sorry about the length, I am now back in Win 2000.

Here is my config:

Blue and White G3 (now G4 600) Jag 10.2.3
Home brewed PC (running AMD 2000XP) XP Home
Lexmark Mono LaserPrinter connected via Parallel port (used to have USB but broke)
shared via Samba

Thanks in advance.

This sounds like a problem I had (and never solved). I was able to mount the XP share when the computers were on the same wired network but I could not mount it when the XP computer was on my wireless (AirPort) network.

Are either of your computers wireless?

I have about 6 other windows computers on my network, two of which are XP. I can easily mount any of them without problem.
I've never had any of the problems you speak of. It's kinda weird...
They only things I can suggest are if sharing prefs are on in XP. I have both remote access options turned on.
You could also try going through the network setup wizard again.
I'm not that great on troubleshooting in windows, sorry if this doesn't help much.

Yup, it is weird. On my old set up it wasn't working at all. But with a new one it worked (even if I used the same passwords). Except when I started fiddling with their preferences (XP and Jag), it did dissappear again. So I am not sure if XP is the one acting up or if it is Jag.
Anyway, hope somebody out there has answers other than I need XP Pro, and XP Home is useless in networking with Jag. I had more success with Win 2000 Pro and 98 SE, just can't figure out what so different.

Thanks again

I'm using XP Pro and 10.2.3 and have no troubles, either. Can share the volume and run RDC quite well over my LAN.

Just an update. Like Jag, when all else fails-reinstalling could be the only cure. It did, now Jag and XP can see each other with no problems(crossing fingers, knocking on wood).
