Hi all,

I'm hoping someone can help me out. This problem seems to have just started today. As far as I know, no changes have been made to my system, and I had no trouble printing at all before.

I am running a G4 Cube (450 MHz G4 with 192 meg of RAM) and OS X 10.2.3.

Just today, I noticed that when trying to print from Safari, it gave an error saying "Error while printing". I opened the Print Center to monitor this and it never even showed up in the print queue or anything.

I tried printing from Chimera and IE as well, and both of those apps basically just did nothing (didn't pop up an error or anything).

I then went to BBedit, created a test document with some text and hit print, and BBEdit returned the following error:

"There is insufficient memory to complete this operation. Closing some windows or increasing the application?s memory partition may help (MacOS Error code -108)."

But again, this literally just started today, and I've never encountered any problems like this before.

Does anyone have any ideas on what this could be? I've tried rebooting, deleting and re-adding the printer in Print Center, etc. and nothing seems to work.

EDIT: As a follow-up, I just tried connecting to my iDisk, and got an error saying:

"Connecting to http://idisk.mac.com/..."

An error has occurred (error = -43)

Not sure if they are related or not, but my printer is also on the network.

Is this a shared printer? If it is, check that Classic isn't running on the computer that's doing the sharing. This sometimes stops the printer from being shared properly leading to all sorts of unusual behavior.

It's an HP LaserJet 8100 hooked up to the network (it shows up both under Rendezvous and AppleTalk, and I've tried it both ways). As far as I know, Classic isn't running on my computer or any others.

And from checking the printer, the printer itself isn't mentioning any errors.

I just have a suspicion something is wrong with my own computer, between this problem and the inability to connect to my iDisk which I also just discovered. But other things seem to work fine (e-mail, web browsing, ICQ and AIM, etc.).

Do you have enough space on your harddrive? How about expanding the memory, it'll be a better OS X experience after an upgrade. I'd recommend 512 Megs extra.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

I have 4 gigs of available space on the hard drive.

Upgrading the memory is an option, but I'm not sure it explains why this is happening now. I've been using this Cube as is for a number of months and never experienced a problem like this.

Did you just install Safari when the printing problem started? I've read of people having trouble with Safari removing the symlink from /private/tmp to /tmp. Worth having a look at, missing that symlink causes all sorts of problems.

Nope, I installed Safari the first day it was available to download. This problem just literally started today.

I opened terminal and see that private is still there, and inside it is a directory called tmp....and inside that a folder called 502, and inside that a folder called Temporary Items.

Do you for sure have that /tmp symlink to /private/tmp?
That was the problem.

Mike

PS - hit versiontracker for a great utility called Print Center Repair

Ahh, I see.....I'm an idiot....I was looking in /private/tmp/ which was there.....but you're right, at the root level there is no /tmp directory

I'm going to give that Print Center Repair thing a try.

Thanks for the advice!

Thanks everyone for the advice! I had to look up how to make a symlink (did ln -s /private/tmp/ /tmp), but after doing that, I can now print successfully and connect to my iDisk.

So, the deal is that Safari is somehow responsible for this?

Anyway, great to know what causes this.

Thanks!
