Hi. I needed to delete several mp3 files in my music folder (probably about 500). I pressed "Command + A" to select all and attempted to drag them to the trash. It caused the beachball, then the Finder crashed- I had to restart the system. I tried it again, it crashed again.

This has never happened to me before. Is it because:
a) it is too many files to select and attempt to drag or delete at once.
b) the new hard drive I installed is causing some conflict or error within the Finder of my system.
c) both a + b.

I would have typed this up as a survey, that would have been clever perhaps, but I am more interested at this point in humbly requesting help on this. I have never experienced this type of instability with the system and am really concerned.

Other relevant notes:
-The system does not crash except when the above task is attempted.
-The files I attempted to delete were extracted from my iPod using 'Xpod"
-Various programs including Cubase SX, Photoshop 7, and Safari have been installed and have ran perfectly so far.
-Various drivers including Kensington Mouseworks and Midiman Audiophile 2496 have been installed and have ran perfectly so far.
-Various preference panes from the "Application Enhancers" series (from Unsanity i believe) have been installed and have ran perfectly so far.
-A new hard drive was installed yesterday, 01/16/03. It is a Maxtor 120Gb drive with 8Mb cache.
-I formatted the new drive and set it as master. The older drive remains as slave- it is the 40Gb drive that came with my Mac.
-I never tried to select and manipulate this many files at once on the previous hard drive.

This is all the information I can think of right now that would assist in resolving this issue. So, again, I ask: "Do you think it's the hard drive or the finder?"

Thank you so much for any help!!

Open a bug here. (You'll need to create an account if you don't have one). Go in your Library/Logs/CrashReporter and see if you have a Finder.crash.log or any relevant file. Copy all the information in this file in the bug report, and attach an Apple Profiler Report too. This will help Apple track down the issue.

Regarding a more immediate solution: do you ("you" meaning he or she that reads this) think I should re-format the new hard drive, or does the finder not multi-task well when moving a large amount of files?
