Hello,

How do I get into the startup programs, and remove the "iChatAgent" ? I see it running in my terminal window, after I type "top".

I think I have to edit a startup file, just don't where it is, or what to do.

You might want that. I think its what enables you to connect using the menu item rather than launching the program.

Wow that's wild. I just noticed that it allows you to connect via the menu item w/o launching the app. I assume that it would launch iChat if I had an incoming message?

heh, yes. it seems that a lot of times, their out of sync and people message me after I quit ichat and it launches...

BTW, is there a particular reason you don't want iChatAgent running since it's used by iChat?

It's not out of sync. You can turn that on or off in the prefs. It's a feature so you can stay connected even while iChat is closed. I never have iChat open unless I'm using it at the moment. I love that feature.

Also note that the iChat app itself uses iChatAgent (or at least I'm pretty sure it does), so deleting it wouldn't be much use. It's probably not a good idea to start turning off random system processes if you don't know what they do

i use that fire app... wasn't looking forward to the aol app included by apple in 10.2, sooner or later, it will be bloated, and i hope apple doesn't come to that.

I'm pretty sure it's safe to disable this program... I just was too lazy to look it up in one my os x books...

does anyone know? It's probably a simple text file that bsd looks at when it starts up, i just want to edit the line that starts the ichat app.

Ok I got... I enabled root... went into where os holds it's guts... and it was under some private frameworks stuff... found the instant message thing and wiped it out. now I don't have an extra app running, and that annoying message icon in the upper left corner is also gone, i didn't think it would remove that though, unix is pretty cool.

maybe this might help someone, should i post this elsewhere on the board (with more detail of course)

You can remove menu items simply by command-dragging them off the menu bar. Also, it is a preference in iChat whether or not that menu item is enabled.

Disabling the iChat menu item diables the iChatAgent. You didn't have to delete it.

That's great. That's what I love about the menu bar icons. Some things really fall somewhere inbetween apps and services, kinda. Is there a way to connect to the service at login w/o opening the iChat app?

Thanks all.

oh, didn't realize that... oh well, probably freed up 2 or three megs off my system drive :-)

seriously though, I hope apple doesn't keep on doing that type of thing, I hope they will keep os x as lean as possible.

Yep, just set iChat menu to Available and you're online. It won't open iChat.app unless someone sent you a message.

He's wanting it to do that automatically when he logs into OS X.

Someone could write an AppleScript to do that but I heard that iChat is not scriptable yet. Once AppleScript 2.0 final came out, we'll be able to do that without depending on that app's applescript-ability by controlling the GUI.

Sounds good to me. I can wait. I'm patient... with some things.

Here's a link that has an iChat "Speed Script" using UI Scripting.

Enjoy.

ROTFLMAO. Too late. About 3 years too late. OS X is not lean. The emphasis in OS X appears not to be on speed.

Launch and quit iChat at startup
