Are there any log files in OSX that record what files have been installed onto your machine or if a file has been moved or changed. In other world a complete log on file transactions for the OS.
I am trying to keep track of the files that are being installed onto my computer when ever someone installs a program. I just want to know when and where they were put.
If there is no such log, is there a program that does this.
Thanks

the logs are all in /private/var/log - but i dont think there is a log with what you want to know, i imagine that would be a very large log if it catalogued every file movement etc...

/Library/Receipts is where a list of items that have been installed using the installer.app are kept. Mostly, it will be a list of Apple Software Updates.
Other installers, like Installer VISE, keep an installations log either at the root of the computer (which I find pretty lazy) or on your desktop (which is also wrong).
I don't know of any package that specifically tracks installation of apps on your machine - it would surely be a pretty tricky thing to do, considering some apps just get copied directly to your Applications folder.
Use the Apple System Profiler if you want an up-to-date audit of all your current installed applications.

There are also logs in ~/Library/Logs, but these are mostly crash logs.
I don't think logs of the type you're looking for are kept.

On a related note, where does 10.2 throw Kernel Panic info now? I finally had a kp on my dual gig last week ,and wanted to see if I could decipher it, but I forgot where to look.

I am surprised that there are now logs kept. This would be a great security wall against people that may gain access to your computer and install some software without your knowledge.
How do virus protection programs protect against certain files being installed on your computer?

the easiest way to view logs IMHO is via the AppleSystemProfiler under the 'Logs' tab.
