Help! An OS9 drive partition on my computer is suddenly showing up in OSX 10.2.3's Get Info window as being a Package instead of a Disk, although it still shows a Drive icon. (I have an OS9 partition and an OSX partition on the same drive.) Additionally, when I try to double-click the OS9 partition within OSX, I get the error message "Item 'Macintosh HD' [the OS9 partition] is used by Mac OS X and cannot be opened."

I've tried the Norton Utilities 7 CD, running the OSX version of Norton Utilities, and running Apple's Disk Utility, but they say nothing's wrong. I've fixed the disk permissions. (BTW, I'm operating as "Root.")

The OS9 partition boots without a problem. Classic also starts up in OSX, but I can't access any applications or documents located on the OS9 partition.

I know that OS9's Package First Aid can correct folders that are seen as packages, but I'm not sure whether it works to fix a drive seen as a package, and I wanted to ask for help rather than go forward and possibly make a mess of things.

Any help would be appreciated. I asked Symantec, but they don't seem to know what to do.

My guess is that the bundle bit somehow got set for your OS 9 partition. If this is the case, I think that Package First Aid ought to do the trick, but if it doesn't, I can write you a quickie app to unset the bundle bit for a folder. Let me know if you need it.

You might also want to make sure your OS 9 partition's name doesn't end with .app or .pkg, but I think that's rather obvious.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

This might be part of the problem... Never run as "root" for day to day use. If you need to know why, read this thread:

Running as Root

(I'm posting the link above to avoid the rehash of the "Don't run as root" flame war

EDIT: Oh yes... the above thread was from before the switch to UBB was made, so all the quotes are messed up

Thanks for the help, Charles! Package First Aid did fix it after all.
