OSX address book is brilliant, but we would like to be able to access the contents somehow over a LAN with an OS9 system and a Windows system. We have been able to do this using Filemaker Pro as a client-server arrangement, even cross-platform. Is this just not possible with OSX address book?

This isn't possible with the AddressBook database. The AddressBook does allow connection to LDAP directories for this purpose, it does not provide an LDAP interface interface for it's data though.
