How cute. Apple welcomes Safari users. Go to

http://www.apple.com

with/without Safari to see it.
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

Why do people have the biggest problems with the smallest issues?

The Safari logo's cute.

Hmmm...there was a bit of sarcasm intended there, but anyway: While not a huge issue in this case, browser sniffing encourags people to design sites "by the browser" instead of "by the standards". Do you like IE only sites? I don't. I also would love to write HTML and CSS and preview it in one browser and be assured that it will work in all of them.

And while were having big problems with small issues, Safari's logo doesn't have a cute.

Regards,
Ben

Sorry, but since the browsers themselves don't adhere to the standards (and haven't for years), I don't see why you think you can do this in the first place.

One of the initial steps in reaching this goal is for people to start desinging with standards in mind. That's all I will say about that, because I am learning Dvorak, and it takes me way to long to write a post to argue!

Dear Editor of the Daily Mail,

Where will this infernal invasion of privacy stop? Next they'll be sniffing my arm-pits on-line. I'm writing to my local MP.

Browser sniffing is pure evil, I will admit, when it's abused. Things like offering different versions of a site, for example, are abuse of this concept.

But offering a quick message to users of a specific browser? That's another matter entirely. That doesn't hold back the Web in any way. It's an appropriate use of a tool which has become unfairly maligned due to the fact that so many people have abused it. Kind of like Flash, actually.

But it does have a contraction ... as in Ben's missed English class again.

All web servers gather information on what browser someone is using.
When you send a request for a web page, it knows what kind of browser requested it. They just chose to use some of that existing information.

Oh no! its so terrible that Apple is thanking one of its 1,000,000 users (well downloaded versions of Safari) Why are you people complaining? I think its a nice feature =)

What happens if you hit the site with IE? Does a big turd appear on the screen

Didn't see it at first... since I had changed my user agent to Netscape to do some online banking. Nice touch though.

I don't agree with this. Providing alternative versions of sites is necessary when dealing with browsers with limited capabilities, PDA type devices and TV based browsers, for example.

I don't get the point.
Imagine you're using lynx under Darwin, or Linux or what else for some reason, wouldn't you like to get a text-based version of the site?
I would, honestly.
Anyway i think we should not talk about "browser sniffing": it is in the web nature for the web server to log the www-agent one uses.

Structural markup and media-specific CSS achieve the same goal with no hacks and better reliability (except in Safari, which mistakenly renders everything you throw at it, but that's likely to be fixed by 1.0).

The point: Code the site the right way once, and there will be no need for alternate versions.

Actually, Safari users see an ad for AirPort Extreme in the lower left of the page while non-Safari users see an ad for Safari.
