I've read several posts about Mail in the past with remarks that it wasn't reliable, couldn't handle large amounts of mail, had problems with attachments sending to Windows, crashed a lot, screwed up mail, etc.

I'm wondering whether these are just the exceptions to the rule that Mail is (hopefully) a beautiful app, or is it true that I should be cautious. Currently I'm using Eudora, which hasn't let me down for a long time, but is sometimes a bit slow. What are your experiences. I'm not interested in using Entourage or Netscape or other clients.

I replied that I haven't had any problems with it which is not entirely correct but still the closest option for me in the poll. I've had the attachments problem on occassion but I've learned how to easily work around the issues to insure that they don't occur anymore. For the most part, it only occurs when sending to someone's AOL account (Windows or Mac) and it's more a flukey interaction between OS X, Mail, and AOL than anything else. If I remember this correctly, make sure that the file (typically a JPEG) contains both a type and creator code if it has any metadata at all. Without it, AOL misinterprets Mail's encoding of the metadata portion and defaults to a MIME type.
