9 was relatively easy - find approptiate picture, scan, clean up, blah blah blah. I have no cloo how to make an OS X icon, and I really need Opus the Penguin as my HD icon.

Xicons.com has some linux icons (is that the penguin you're looking for?)

Iconographer lets you make and edit icons for Mac OS X as well as for Windows.

To save an icon for OS X, make sure to choose "Mac OS X Icon" in the Save dialog.

But for pre-made icons, check out Xicons.com or IconFactory.com.

a really simple way is to.

Make a pic using any graphic app. save it
then use the drag n drop app pic2icon to make a icon from the picture, it supports full photoshop transparancies and is free, its on versiontracker.com

Yeah I loved pic2icon too but ever since 10.2 It seems to act screwy on me and doesn't seem to recognice alphas in PS files. Does it work for you under 10.2 or is something else going on here? I assumed it didn't work right because something broke under 10.2 but it may be something wrong on my machine.

Those are softwares that I'd recommend for making icons:

Iconographer
Pic2Icon
Can Combine Icon

IconBuilder Pro from IconFactory isn't good for newbie, or maybe anyone. It's too confusing and limited. I dislike it.

If you want to know what softwares I use to build Icons, I use Photoshop, Iconographer and icns2icon by Rickster.

Once you get in the icon making, you'll become hooked. It's fun, really

I use Icon Composer included in the dev tools...

I save in .Tiff and import into Icon Composer, but I never get good small icons they are always jaggy.

Just to balance the scales here, I found IconBuilder Pro very slick and cool. Having all the functionality right there in Photoshop, with no exporting needed, is very handy, as is the preview function (you can see how your work-in-progress will look against a variety of desktop backgrounds--helped me to catch a few masking errors). One thing I don't care for is the price: $69.00. Definitely not for casual icon makers.
