Hi there,

I have a problem on my Dual USB iBook running Mac OS X 10.2.3 whereby, from time to time, Window Manager hangs at login. This has been happening sporadically since I installed Jaguar (done using an Archive & Install) and I have tried all obvious fixes (repair the disk, repairing the disk permissions, etc).

When this happens I can still telnet/ssh in from another machine but if I try killing the Window Manager process (even using sudo kill -KILL), nothing happens. Rebooting from the command line won't even work because the Window Manager process is 'stuck' and refuses to terminate.

Checking the system.log files after I've restarted, there are always messages like the following for each application that gets launched at login:

Jan 21 00:53:21 mycomputer /Applications/iCal.app/Contents/Resources/iCal Helper.app/C
ontents/MacOS/iCal Helper: (ipc/rcv) timed out : RPC to Window Manager process failed
Jan 21 00:53:21 mycomputer /Applications/iCal.app/Contents/Resources/iCal Helper.app/C
ontents/MacOS/iCal Helper: CoreGraphics server version not compatible with app; log out or
reboot needed (268451843)

As far as I can tell, these messages do not indicate a problem with the application in question, especially since they appear for every application executed at login and these same applications all work fine on my Power Mac G4. However, I believe they do confirm my above theory that Window Manager has hung.

I should also point out that there are 3 or 4 users of my iBook (each with their own username) and this happens to all of them when logging in from time to time.

On the other hand, this only happens 1 login out of every 10, say, so I cannot believe that there is anything wrong with the Window Manager binary itself, for example.

I am stumped as to what could be causing this. Has anyone else got any ideas?

Cheers!

I think it's old iCal VS new iCal

I had an issues with

1.Logging in
2.iCal quitting.

Since the release of iSync 1.0 iCal needs to be updated. I would delete all iCal stuff and reinstall this worked for me although your error looks a little different that would be my first task. (Sometimes the iCal updater does not work fully IMHO so I delete all iCal stuff reboot then install from scratch)

Good Luck and see you at lectures...

Hmmmmmmm... I knew it was rather dangerous posting an example with iCal Helper in it.

This problem has absolutely nothing to do with iCal or iCal Helper. In fact, it was happening before iCal was even released.

Anyone else got any ideas as to why Window Manager would just hang?

It's possible that you may have installed a theme that patched CoreGraphics. A few have done so, which is totally nuts in my opinion.

If so, you'll have to dig up the correct version and manually install it, or else reinstall your OS.

I've definitely never installed a theme that patched CG, or any other sort of OS-wide theme for that matter.

Anyway, the fact that this problem is intermittent is what is most puzzling.
