I get the crash too. It only happens when I launch iPulse or NetUpdate by NetBarrier. I have heard some people getting it from Retrospect. To find out which app is causing the crash, look in your system logs and see what app is trying to be prebound. The fix_prebinding routine still launches and runs when its needed.

I have fix_prebinding crash at random, even if the computer is sitting idle. Since then I looked at the console and the following message is appearing a few dozen times per second:

Jan 22 17:47:17 Hawks-Computer /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemUIServer.app/Contents/MacOS/SystemUIServer: kCGErrorFailure : CGSGetWindowGeometry: Invalid window

ideas?

I get the same thing on log-in on my powerbook.

My log is thus - but it doesn't really show anything - as the CGXDisableUpdate: message appears all the time on both my machines - it's perfectly normal.

"CGSGetWindowGeometry: Invalid window"

I get this when GoLive is launched. I would quit your open apps one by one to see whats causing this.

Diggory:

Did you open your system log in the /var directory to see what app is trying to prebind?

Wow - I didn't realise that system.log was so much more versbose than what appears in the console:

Thanks for the tip - It appears that Formac's Studio TVR timer app is the problem - which is strange - because I have it installed on two machines - and fix_prebinding only crashes on this one.

Is there anything I should do?

here is the full log:

Well...from what I can tell, is that it has to be the programming of that particular app...this is from a laymans research effort. I was getting the crash when I launched iPulse...he updated the app today and guess what...no more crash. You can try one of the manual prebinding apps that we use to use when we were using 10.1.5, it may force it to prebind, but someone reported in the Apple forums that it was only a temporary fix. The crash started coming back eventually. Since the fix_prebinding is still launching when needed, I don't think its hurting anything. Its just a bit of a nuisance.

try typing this in your terminal

sudo update_prebinding -root /

I put it in there every couple of months. maybe even once a month. it updates the prebindings I guess and I think it speeds my computer up. I am not sure if it does or not but I like doing it because it looks like it is doing a lot of crap. just like the repairing permissions.

does that prebinding do only good to the system?
I mean, is there a risk of damaging anything? if not, I will setup a monthly cron task.
Are there any other UNIX mainenance commands that can be executed?

I believe that this is a 10.2.3 bug

I have the problem whenever I use OmniOutliner 2.1.1, others have reported it for OmniWeb, and looking at the random list of apps here... it appears that it is the fix_prebinding process itself that is at fault.

What does all the crap below mean, Terminal spews it at me when updating prebindings....
My computers got no probs buts it just interests me

It then ends with

Kinda makes me think the prebinding command is a waste of time.

I has this happen a lot after upgrading to Jaguar (I went to 10.2.3 from 10.1.5), and found that it all seemed to start with Retrospect (I have since switched to Deja Vu for backups). There was a thread in this forum a while ago about rebuilding a hidden preferences file (I think it was .GlobalPrefs), see if you can find it in a search. Others reported that downloading the 10.2.3 Combo Updater and running it over your existing 10.2.3 installation would help. That seemed to do it for me.
I do not like those green links and spam.
I do not like them, Sam I am.
