Is it possible to use the software restore disc that comes with my Powerbook to install OSX.2 on my iMac dvse 400mhz? (currently OSX.1.5)

Obviously, if this is illegal, I wouldn't dream of doing it But theoretically, possible?

thanks in advance...

It is almost certainly illegal, just like using the restore disk to install onto another powerbook would be illegal.

In my experience when I needed to restore a system I had to correctly match up the restore disk to the system type that it came with or it would say that it couldn't restore the system.

And no, I wasn't doing illegal things, I used to just stack all my restore disks together thinking they were interchangeable and they are not.

Theoretically impossible. The restore cds will only work on the hardware that it came with. And yes, it's highly illegal.

it's not possible using the software restore disks since those don't have the system on them. (Just third party software that came with your PB)

With your system discs (there should be two) though it might be another story...

I believe this is possible. At least, I used the DVD from my 1ghz Ti to restore my Ti500. So it may vgary, but it did work.

I mean, just try it--if it doesn't work it'll kick you out of the process before installing.

Maybe.

was told by an Apple Store Genius that they would work for the same imac... ended up not using them... but there you go.

btw, make sure you do the firmware updates before installing 10.2

Thanks! I wonder, is it still illegal if I promise not to turn both machines on at once? Or, as its "highly" illegal, should start to vary my route home from work?

I'll give it a go when I get my new machine. thanks again.

Yes, or you will end up with a non-functioning iMac. This caused my friend considerable grief after he bought Jag to install on his iMac. The upgrade disabled the internal video, but you could still use the external one. Why can't Apple put in a simple warning and quit the installer? It couldn't be that hard.
