Interesting, but I don't believe it.

iDVD has never supported external drives. You don't need an Apple SuperDrive to burn DVDs in iDVD. You can use a third party drive as long as it's internal.

Personally, I just think it's a bad editor in their PR department.

But one can only hope...

I don't understand why iDVD wouldn't support external burners. Is it because they don't want to take time to make sure third-party hard ware works?

Again, I am pretty sure this is a licensing issue with DVD decoding/encoding stuff. This has been addressed many times before in other threads, people have suggested often that if this IS a licensing issue, Apple should offer a boxed version at a higher price (to cover license fees) for external drives. I don't know the real reason, probably they want you to buy a new mac instead of an external drive...

I think Apple is trying to sell computers... iDVD, iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie etc. etc. are all bonus stuff...

They charge a little extra for iDVD because of all the licenses...

If they gave a version of iDVD out that worked with any DVD-R drive for a higher price, everyone would just pirate it...

you can tell that the text at the in the picture above has been altered. The lower text is much smaller than the original text.

I thought any external drive could be supported with Other World Computing's hack?

Well, it seems that the circled text is a footnote to a numbered section in the previous paragraphs. The other point is that it's talking about iPhoto so I think the caption was supposed to say iPhoto, not iDVD. In which case, you just need any external DVD burner to burn backed up copies of your Albums and library.

No offense, Tiffany, but it seems to be legit:

http://www.apple.com/iphoto/organize.html

Plus, I got an Apple eNews email that says the same thing.

Wow, that's good news for all those people out there that have G4 Cubes that don't feel like shelling out $500 for a slot loading DVD-R Drive and ripping apart their cube. Same with PowerBook G4 owners with no SuperDrive!

here's what the preceding link says, copied directly from that site:

"* Burning an iPhoto archive to DVD requires Mac OS X 10.2 “Jaguar” and a SuperDrive, or other Mac-compatible DVD burning drive. "

that says nothing about internal/external. just that it's gotta be compatible. Now, maybe apple says elsewhere that only internal drives are "compatible"...?

Here's the quote from my Apple eNews email (sorry I'm too lazy to capture it): the wording's slightly different:
1 To burn photos to a CD or DVD, run Software Update and install Mac OS X v10.2.2 or later. Burning photos to a DVD in iDVD requires a Mac with a SuperDrive or other DVD-burning drive.
--italics mine
My guess is that the email's a typo and incorrect. Why would one need iDVD to burn files to a DVD (as in Mr.Chin's point)?

The only thing proven is that one can burn to an external DVD-R from the Finder and not need Toast (or can that be done now?).

Because iDVD makes slideshows viewable on a DVD player.

It makes perfect sense. iTunes wasn't able to burn CD's with external CD-RW drives originally either. The ability to do so got added eventually, though, I think in iTunes 2.

How do you know for a fact? Can you shed any more light on your assertion?

I read that when asked at the show, Apple iDVD 3 experts told the Press that it wouldn't work with external burners.

Did they change that plan/policy? Or were the reps at MWSF all blowing smoke?

This is great news if true. I thought that the fine print was referring to if you put a third party DVD-RW drive inside a tower.
