When you plug in your camera does it mount on the desktop as a hard drive? If so, search around in the folders inside that drive for your video files.
I don't have any experience with cameras that work with iPhoto because my Vivitar digital camera. So I just copy the image files over manually and rename them etc.

You have two choices:
1 - dig about in the camera "Drive" - it will appear as a volume when attached (and on)
2 - (much easier) - after you have removed the photos with iTunes - open "Image Capture" (it's in the Applications folder.)
Then click 'import' - it will download the movies to your movies folder.
N.b. - image capture will try and download photos too - so make sure you get the photos in iPhoto first.

Any idea, what's wrong when my ixus v doesn't want to mount? Never has, neither under 10.1 nor 10.2.

Use ImageCapture.
I have a Canon S230.
ImageCapture will download pictures to the Pictures folder, and movies to the Movies folder. All with the click of one dialog button. The camera must be in point-to-point mode (I think).
AFAIK, Mac OSX does not mount the Canons to look like an external drive. You'd need a CompactFlash card reader for that.
