Is it possible to dissable the start-up sound in OSX?
Everytime is switch my machine on early in the morning, my 13 months old son awakens.

My startup sound just doesn't work with X anymore - however, if I boot into 9 it chimes, its really weird. I have a dual 450.

I have two options for you
1) Try muting your computer before shutting it down.
2) Instead of shutting you computer down, try putting it to sleep.

yup...
If I mute the computer before I shut down or restart, the startup bell will not ring. That works in OS 9 and OS X.
No other way that I know of to permanently disable it.

Unfortunately for us late-night Maccers, the sound is stored in the BIOS. The only ways I know of to turn it off are to mute the computer before shutting down, or shutting your speakers off.

Seems like a dumb solution, but you could mute all sound out of your mac simply by plugging in any sort of mini-stereo plug into your headphone/audio out jack...a pair of headphones, a headphone adapter, etc.

I always do this. It's a simple solution to a problem a lot of us have.

WARNING: Rampant guesswork worded as the truth ahead.
The startup sound may be in the ROM, but it is also in the BootX file. On every shutdown, the ROM gets reloaded with this data, thus the ability to have a custom startup picture, even before your HD spins up.
