OK. Three very strange events are happenning at this moment:

1) All of Apple's servers, including .mac, are down.
2) MacNN is faster than it's been in years.
3) In the US, it is now January 25, the original release date for the iLife suite, and with it, iPhoto2 and iMovie3, which would be free downloads.

Coincidence? I think not. Just one catch: iLife was delayed for a week. Try again next Saturday, folks. So that maybe those of us who depend on things like, say, .mac e-mail can get in? Pretty please?

I doubt this has anything to do with iLife. I think most folks (at this late on a Saturday night) would have something better to do than "clog" Apple's servers.

.Mac is down due to something else, be it maintenance or an update. I really don't think users are "clogging" .Mac. That would not be the location (www.mac.com) of the downloads anyway.

Apple won't be shoving all those copies of iLife through their pipes anyways. That's what Akamai is for.

Yes, but everything of Apple's is down. The main page, the Apple Store, the eveloper area, .mac... even if the .mac servers are down for maintenance, that shouldn't take down everything. If it does, then Apple needs to hire some new network architects. Either that, or their whole backbone is totally saturated... such as it would be by the hordes of people trying to download iLife. Even if Akamai handles the downloads themselves, Apple's servers link to them and handle all the inane forms processing and all that, so their servers could still be clogged.

They must have just gotten it back up; I'd been trying for hours. But you're right, that one is up again now.

So, when will they fix .mac this time? Perhaps I should start a betting pool, given how frequently this happens...

I don't think web page requests, no matter how many, would take down Apple's servers.

Doesn't seem faster to me.

In fact everything was really slow for a while, but that could have been a local thing.

I just got the familiar "mail sent" sound from Entourage, and did notice that I can now send and recieve via POP/SMTP. However, it is S-L-O-W as a D-O-G and who knows about webmail or .Mac.

Could this be causing a problem with iTunes streaming radio stations? It won't let me browse catagories. Are these things interconnected?

The online AppleStore is down too! And I was gonna check the price for the 12" Powerbook G4 on the Education division of the Online Applestore. Shucks.

.mac is not working for me either!

I smell a OS X10.2.4 update! Keep your fingers crossed!

Hey! Maybe Apple's gonna refresh it's products. . . meaning new iMacs, new PowerMac G4s, and new ibooks! Why else would the Applestore site be down?

Wow ... I didn't even THINK about the apple store site. This could be BIG news. Mail works intermittently for me still. I'm predicting .mac online address book sync and most of the product line updated with FW800, Airport Extreme. No speed boosts, might be wrong, it's pretty late here

Well, that's all shot to sh*t now ... !

Man, just when I'm trying to download some cool application from a .Mac site... damn the man!!! The download was dog slow in Safari and it was freakin' my system out, making my mouse all laggy and Safari was way skiddish. So I try to download with wget in the terminal, repeated attempts fail... doh.

I don't think Apple is planning anything.. why? Because two of the largest Internet Backbone are down, and causing problems with the net.

http://www.internetpulse.net/

I believe this is what's causing all the problems for some people, and some people are having none. But hopefully I'm wrong!

wait and see (imap .mac mail is up for me now)

edit: imap is down one more time

There's a massive DDOS attack going on all over the internet right now. It started at around 11:30PM EST and has knocked out lots of root DNS servers. That's why you can't reach Apple.

I wouldn't think Apple would kill all it's servers for a 10.2.4 update. They have NEVER done this. .Mac isn't working either, but it is kinda... ****. Happy to be not a customer.

But erhm, the Apple video ad is still working....

I don't see what the backbone problems are on that site. Anyway, my internet is stormingly fast.

Heh, well I can get to it fine. I can also browse Apple. Different ISPs will have very different success in connecting to varoius sites during an attack like this. I will be able to see sites you cant and vice versa.

I can see every site overhere, but when I get over the ocean on sites like Apple and the URL you passed, it is just one big trouble.

As linked to on Webhostingtalk...

It's a virus reaching out to a known MS SQL server exploit on UDP port 1434

Makes me mad that one stupid MS exploit can bring the rest of the internet to it's knees (even the people who consciously AVOID MS software.

What's DDOS? I'm just curous; they way you describe it makes it sound like the US is being attacked through cyberspace, and war has taken on a completely new front.

I can't even load my own webpages hosted on my iDisk.

Seems silly that apple.com was still working and .mac wasnt't...

Lazy sys admins again not installing updates

If there where not trying to become the next BOFH they might have installed it...

No. MS is still to blame. Anyone installing visual studio gets a sql server, turned on by default. Most people don't even know they have it, much less that they have to patch it.

So basically this crashed domain name servers and internet backbone servers?

Explains why I could access sites that the IP was cached.

Actually, they are both to blame. The admins should have been more proactive. However, MS should be more proactive in getting their patches out. Most of their patches are not included in Windows Update. Admins have to actively search for relevant patches on MS' patch page, which can be pretty daunting.

Yeah, I did a little writeup on this for our users -- nothing that hasn't been said before, but it does wrap things up fairly well in lay-terms. And with pretty pictures too:
