I know nothing about networks so here goes. I have an iMac 800mhz and
an iBook 700mhz both running 10.2.3. I would like to network the two of
them so that they can use my single 56k internect connection. Is this
possible? Could they both be online at the same time? What would be best
to do this if it can be done?

The answer is yes, you can network them together to use a 56K connection as long as you have a router that has this capability. Asante makes a router that will allow this to occur. The real question in my mind is why would you want to? You would be much better off using a broadband connection if it is availabe.

you don't need a router, does your imac have a airport card? if not you should probably get one so your ibook can talk to your imac wirelessly...
now to share your internet connection without a expensive router simply dialup to the internet with your imac and then go to system-preferences and go to 'sharing'.
click on 'internet' a choose the options you want... if you don't have an aiport card in your imac then it should automatically detect you have a dialup connection with your modem and if you have your ibook and imac connected over ethernet you just hit start.
now to make sure your ibook works go to 'system-preferences' and go to 'network', go to the 'buit-in ethernet' port and set to to automatically get an IP adress of DHCP and hit apply, it should then get an IP from your imac within a few seconds.

use the natd to share the Dial-Up internet connection ... I think Jaguar's built-in "Internet Sharing" also does this.

Expensive router? I can get the Asanet FR3004 which has a built in modem port for $64. You were advocating buying airport cards that cost at least as much and you would need two of them. And then you would need to leave one of the machines up and running all the time to have access to the internet. The router provides firewall protection and you don't need to leave your machine up and running all the time. Not to mention that the router also give you capability if you decide to expand later.

Routers are fantastic. I never thought I would need a five-port router, but sure enough I filled it up. Great firewall protection, too, like you said. I agree. A router is the way to go.
