Hi,
I am ready to buy a 12inch powerbook! Very excited.

But how can i transfer all my email from outlook express to osx?

Also, is mail.app or entourage better?
I have thousands of emails so something that is fast, and good at searching is the best.

thank

Apple promotes this software on its Switch site. A quick search on VersionTracker didn't really come up with much, but Move2Mac looks like it will do the trick - for a (small) price.

Hi,
I already checked this and the specs say that it will transfer your address book (and maybe mail SETTINGS) but says nothing about the actual email.

I am going to an apple store today to check out the 12 inch and find out about retail price, but it would be so terrible if i couldnt import my email.

thanks

If you have a large enough IMAP server, you could transfer your mail to it, then download it with the Mac.

Barring that, you might want to look into Entourage - it may be able to import from Outlook on Windows, I'm not sure.

i remember when you launch Mail.app for the fisrt time that it offers you to import most "mailboxes format" (i'm pretty sure it has Outlook)

so i suppose that if you connect to your PC using SMB (command-K) in the finder, find your Outlook mailbox, then import, it should work

hope this helps

Mail.app states Outlook, but I'm not sure this is Outlook for Mac only (which could be, knowing the damned M. company).

But isn't there an option to export to mbox format in Outlook Express? These messages will be imported by Mail.app, it states.

Hi,
yeah, i bet it it only transferring outlook express from os9.
I have done a bit of searching and I cant believe there isnt any way. I am very sceptical because it says nothing about it on the apple site. If it was possible I am sure they would be saying it was easy!

I have over 10,000 emails with big attachments, plus i want my sent folder too. Too big for imap. I think i have over a gigabyte of emails.

If anyone has any answers, please let me know!

thanks

Hey, just send an eMail or call Apple about your situation. They'll be dying to help you out, and I'm sure they can (read: want) give you what you need to know in order to switch.

hi everyone.
I just found this on apple KB website"

http://discussions.info.apple.com/We....4@.3bbe0823/0

"In the Feb 03 issue of MacWorld (p. 49) there is a review of Move2Mac that, although the program doesn't transfer your Outlook or OE email directly, does give instructions for how to transfer them manually. Summary:
1. Install and use Netscape 7 on Windows to import your Outlook/Outlook Express mail folders.
2. Open them in Netscape for Macintosh (that's all it said, no info on what files/folders need to be copied to where...)
3. From there export them to OS X's mail.app "

Looks like a lot of hassle! Surely it cant be this hard?
I am worried that my attachments will not end up on my mac.

I cant try this because I dont have a mac. Anyone want to give it a shot?

I will give it a shot, assuming Outlook Express is installed on Windows XP by default.

You might try this:

I have no experience with it personally. Just did a quick search on versiontracker.

On a releated note:

If you want to automate the process of importing addresses from other mail apps running on Mac OS X, use the set of Mail scripts installed in: /Library/Scripts/Mail Scripts

When you buy a mac, you get 3 months free trial to .mac, which is what I used to transfer all my outlook 2000 mail from my pc to .mail on the new mac.

Make a set of folders in .mail on the mac that are the same as the folders on your pc in outlook. then setup the .mac account on both machines. Upload the mail from the first folder on the pc to the .mac account, and then sync the mac with it. It will copy all your mail down to .mail.

repeat the process with each folder until it's all done. It's a bit longwinded, but it did allow me to get several thousand mails all through to the new machine.

For moving the calendar across, I used iappoint, which is a brilliant script available here

Hope this helps,

Justin.

That software worked pretty well. I was going to go through Netscape until I read your post. The program itself feels awful and I think the UI to blame. I think it might be Java but I'm not sure. It does it's job, though, and I guess that's what counts.

Here's what I did:
  1. Set up a POP3 account on my mail server and sent myself several e-mails, some with attachments some without.
  2. Set up Outlook Express in Windows XP to use that POP3 account and downloaded the mail.
  3. Copied the "Outlook Express" folder at "CDocuments and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{string-of-numbers}\Microsoft" to my Mac.
  4. Used Emailchemy to convert the mail to Apple Mail.app format (I used the Outlook Express Windows Wizard from the Wizards menu)
  5. Copied the resulting mailboxes to ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes and re-launched Mail.app. (This step could be replaced by simply setting the output directory to ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes instead of copying it there afterwards, I recommend doing this [close Mail.app first]).
The e-mail is in the "On my Mac" mailbox in Mail.app. All the attachments are still there. There is only one problem. Because I did not register Emailchemy, it changed all the "From" headers of the messages to "Weird Kid Software <original-email-address>" and changed all the Subjects to "Please Purchase Emailchemy." Other than that, the e-mail is intact. So, you should register it. It's half the price of the Move2Mac software.

I really dislike the UI and feel of Emailchemy. (The fact that it installs with Installer.app is disappointing too, since all Installer ends up doing is copying the folder to /Applications by default.) I don't know how it will hold up to thousands of e-mails but it's better than doing it by hand, and since you're working off copies, it can't hurt to try.

Note: I used boldness in this post to point out places where it is not a direct quote but rather something that isn't going to be the same if you follow the steps.

Note 2: This doesn't import settings from Outlook Express. It only imports the mail itself, which, I believe, is your largest concern.

While Emailchemy's interface doesn't feel very polished, I've used it to migrate mailboxes with thousands of messages from QuickMail Pro to mail.app. It's not without a minor quirk or 2, but I was thrilled to be able to get mail out of that dead-end app.
The developer at WierdKid was real nice to work with- he sent me betas and I gave him feedback as he was tweaking the QMP translator. I'd recommend his software.
Oh- it is java, so it could be run on the mac or win side.

Well if that's the case then who really cares about the UI? With an app like this that's only run very seldomly, the outcome is what matters.

If it were the e-mail client, it'd be a whole different story.

hi,
I tried this out at work and it imported all my email into mail.app.
IMported into netscape 7 windows (fast!). Then copied the mail folder to the desktop of my mac throught the network. CDocuments and Settings\my name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\7jmvl7ok.slt\Mail\Lo cal Folders\

Opened up mail.app and chose import from netscape 4+ and selected the folder on my desktop, and it imported. It took forever.
Everything seems ok. But a big slow on this cube at work. I hope it is better on the 12inch powerbook.

I didnt try the other mentioned software because of the cost.

Also, is entourage faster than mail.app for viewing large folders and searching? Also, I wanted to search for ONLY emails with attachments, but i could do that.... Is there a site with lots of applescripts that open up the functionality?

Will order my new powerbook this weekend!

No experience of entourage, but searching in Mail is very fast in my experience (although I only have several hundred e-mails and not thousands).

Also, under the View menu, you can select to view the Attachments column - if you then click the Attachments column header, it will sort all your e-mails into those with attachments and those without. I don't know of any specific way to search within just those with attachments.

I guess that would be my first MacOS X tip - always check the View menu, especially for the Customise Toolbar... option as you will find many features in an Application that you wouldn't necessarily know about.

I simply imported mail into Mozilla on the PC, exported the mailboxes and burnt them on cd. Dragged them on the Mac desktop and add the .mbox extension. You should be able to open them using Entourage now.

From your PC, burn a CD with your c:/Documents and Settings/[username] folder on it. Open Entourage, choose Import your messages with mbox format, and navigate to this folder:

[username]/Local Settings/Application Data/Identities/[a unique string of letters and numbers]/Microsoft/Outlook Express

Inside this folder are all of your Outlook Express databases in .dbx format. When you're in Entourage, ask it to import your messages using the mbox option and your .dbx message databases will import.

I confirmed this using Virtual PC. Just dragged the WinXP Outlook Express folder (from the path above) to my Mac desktop and imported. This doesn't work in Apple Mail though.

Hope this helps.
